Hi it's me again, Brandye. Dakota is my little pony mare and Section A Welsh. SHe's 9 years old and I am trying to get her into Western pleasure some at fun shows (like in July). Dakota doesn't know how to lope. Yeah she canters like a dream and does a beautiful trot. She just don't know how to lope :-( so I am trying to figure out how to get her to lope?

Patience, Brandye! :lol: :lol: :lol: Cantering IS loping - just two different words to describe the same thing.
 
msscamp is right...cantering and loping are just two different words that mean to move at a smooth easy gait :)
 
OOOH - oops. It's just that everyone around here with the quarter horses keeps saying like loping is for western only and cantering is for english. CONFUSIN

No reason for the 'oops', and I'm sure not going to argue on the confusing part! :lol: :lol: :lol: I would be willing to bet that, although loping is generally a western riding term and cantering is generally an english riding term, somewhere along the line as people started doing both types of riding, the terms got carried over as well and became interchangeable. I don't know this for a fact, but it would be my guess. If one does not do both types of riding, then one would not necessarily know they are both terms for the same gait.
