Every year I get a call from someone that loses an animal that falls through a frozen pond and they always say the same thing - "I never thought they would.....".

Posting on the beginners board to say ...... "they will"!!!!

Not to mention the hazards to humans out there breaking the ice for them.
That would be me! Two years ago I was breaking ice for my replacement heifers - the only pasture that doesn't have a well/stock tank. Broke a hole with my pic ax, got popped on the behind by a heifer, and went sliding across the pond like a dang hockey puck - still clinging to the ax. Had to do the crab walk/slug slide back to the bank. Zero traction, so had to stick my foot though the hole I just cut to get out. Naturally, it didn't occur to me to pull up the leg of my coveralls, so by the time I made it back to the house I was frozen and ended up with a bruise on my left butt cheek the size of Dallas. There may have been profanities. But at least I didn't go though the ice! Water well was dug that spring.
