I agree but Maximillan semen isn't for sale at this time and I don't think it ever will be. Just contact them and find out if you can buy some semen on him. He does have some pretty impressive EPDs.

No, I did not bother them because their web site reads they do not sell semen, at least to the general public. I wonder if $50,000 - $100,000 can make someone change their mind.
 
Instead of giving away the farm for an interest in the bull, why not see what they will sell a flush of one of their better donors for bred to that Maximillian bull you like so much. Or better yet go halves with them on a donor with the understanding that the goal of that partnership is Maximillian progeny. You won't get a 1000 of them but over time (if you pick a good donor) you might get a bull as good as Maximillian (or better if you can pare down the awful birth weight EPD) to build your program around and you won't have to invest your kids' college fund on an interest in a bull that the current owners don't want to market semen off of.
 
As a nonsensical aside, the only Maximillion I am familiar with was an Austrian nobleman that the French dictatorship of Louis Napoleaon III tried to install as dictator of Mexico while the U.S. was tied up in the Civil War, sparking a nasty rebellion by the Mexicans. The whole sorry spectacle, despite the heroics of the French Foreign Legion, ended badly for almost everyone (France, Maximillion, Louis Napolean III, and an impoverished Mexico). (John Wayne and Rock Hudson did a movie about it). My apologies if my historical memories from high school are not 100% accurate. Is there an obscure line of Herefords I have not bumped into in my travels by that name or is this the first? and why would anybody name their bull after a dead dictator? Is Saddam Hussein going to get a bull named after him next??

Too late, has already happened. An SA hereford bull Locheim Saddam already exists. i'll try and find a photo.
 
The bull looks good in a picture, but here is the MOST important question in my mind. WHY DOES A SEVEN YEAR OLD BULL NOT HAVE ANY PROGENY YEARLING WEIGHTS REPORTED? Do I have your attention now? I do apologize for "yelling", but this is a major problem for me in the Hereford breed. Here is a bull that has too much BW and frame for me to be able to market in my area, yet there is nothing wrong with the bull phenotypically that I can see from this picture. If this bull has something to contribute to the Hereford breed (which if I owned him I would think so and be very excited about) get those genetics out there where they can be used. Despite the BW EPD, I believe the performance pedigree shows a lot of promise that BW is not going to be an issue with the bull. So please anyone tell me either why this bull should or should not be used by other breeders out there that think there is value too it ot tell me why the owners of this bull think he is so special to shut off what has the opportunity to be a major source of income for them. It really makes me wonder if there is something there to hide? I doubt there is because I don't have any issues with reports I have heard and cattle I have seen from the Bar JZ outfit, but why even leave it to question.

IN SUMMARY, report all of your data, let the chips fall where they may and be ready to market what you have to those willing to use it. Remember, there is always somebody out there looking for something different and aching to use it. This bull just might be the one to do just that for lots of people. Woodland View Farms thinks so or they would not have put it on their website; just provide the most complete and accurate picture possible.

Actually Hereford Sire, I contacted Mr. Jim Hensen about Maximilian and left a message. I do know that Olson Hereford Ranch, Carl Olson is or already has flushed a donor cow of his to Maximilian, but Olson and RJH have done business together a lot as well.

I think this whole thread is a joke. Some guy being a smart aleck and everyone thinks he's serious. Is 5.7 BW a big deal? No. So lock this thread please.

I don't want to pull calves if I don't have to just like most ranchers. At the same time, I want the birth weight to be as high as possible without assisting during labor. I also prefer larger than average frames. This bull fits want I would like to invest in, at least during my preliminary search. I believe too many breeders want to lower birth weights and frames too much and they focus on low BW and high calving ease EPDs. While these appear very important, I think it is negative in the long term. Combined with at least one of my donor cows, the projected progeny numbers would be very nice indeed. For example, the 5.7 (?) and the 0.8 BW would average to under three which is my goal, at the same time, the combined YW would be over 120 and the frame would be about 7 (please see prior emails concerning this topic).
 
1000 straws, $25.00 a straw = $25000.00. Would not suprise me if you could lease him or buy him for $25000.00. There's a lot of reasons not to sell semen, one of the main ones is its not high enough quality to freeze [sell].

You have a nice selection there. That one makes my mouth water but not like Max. Max is listed on the web site as 93 pounds at birth. I can live with that as long as I don't have to assist in delivery. I believe birth weights can increase with time provided the female generations are allowed to by the breeder. Maybe the first generation represents the most risk?

Hi THG! Nice to have you back! I sure do enjoy reading your posts even though you take a real beating. I learn more from your posts than many others combined.

I think by not selling semen from Max, the stock they grow from Max brings in more cash, at least that seems to be the philosophy. However, this may change as the bull gets older. What do you think?
