History of Polled Herefords in the UK

"British polled Herefords were developed by a group of breeders through crossing a Galloway bull with a horned Hereford cow. The resulting progeny bred true polled Herefords. By 1955 this new British Polled strain was established and was admitted into the Herd Book."

from the AHA site (history of the Polled Hereford in the US):

"In 1898, Warren Gammon, an Iowa cattleman and lawyer, happened to see an exhibit of naturally hornless Herefords at the Trans-Mississippi World's Fair in Omaha, Neb. He set about to "fix" the hornless trait using the bull Giant and 11 females. From his efforts came the development of the American Polled Hereford Association (APHA). This association maintained ancestral and performance records on Polled Herefords until the merger of the APHA and AHA in 1995."
 
Makes some sense, but I thought Herefords couldn't be upgraded from other breeds and still be registered. Is that only true in the U.S.? I also assumed that Polled Herefords had originated from one source, not two. Guess I was wrong there.

Also, I read somewhere that there were about 1.5 million Polled Herefords in the U.S. by the 1950's. Why then would there be a need to "create" more using Galloways?

Not trying to be a smart alec, just curious.
 
Quote from the AHA rules
"Herefords registered in other associations (members of the World Hereford Council) can be entered in the American Hereford Record, thereby making their offspring eligible for registration."

I am not sure if any of the member countries allow breeding up still, but according to this rule the ones that were breed up from Galloway's in the UK are eligible to be in the AHA as the Hereford Cattle Society is a member of the World Hereford Council.
 
I remembered this post and thought I would review it. To me, it appears that Polled Herefords were developed from two sources, using Galloways in the UK and naturally in the US.

Does anyone know if the U.S. has had much influnce from the UK in the Polled Hereford industry since the 1950's? Maybe through Canada?
