Didn't want to clog up the eating thread.

Here is an article I posted there , Like I said I have eaten the berries with no ill effect . I swallow them whole. I also pick a bunch and freeze them to take one a day. I was told stories of a horse with a swollen knee and was lame and an Old Cow/Horse man came out to look at it. He took his pocket knife and cut a tiny slit on the horse shoulder and then poked a piece of root in it under the skin , Poke root, he then rubbed some salve on it, My Gpa and uncle said it healed up and the horse was fine after that. Did the root work ?????? did it not work ??????? God gave us everything we needed so im under the impression it works.

M-5, you have really stirred my curiosity up with poke weed, the berries and consumption of it. I'll be watching this thread to get some experienced input from others as well as yourself. As far a I know it's doesn't grow in Oregon although one map I found says it does, but I know no one or have known no one to have ever eaten it. What does it taste like, meaning sweet, bitter, similar to....... Fill in the blank.

Here's is a page I found that help me get an idea of what it is and what parts and when it is eaten. But as we all know one persons opinion is not necessarily fact. Anyone feel free to make corrections to what's said in the page...please. I agree, to maintain our health most times all we need to do is know what God gave use. The Chinese and Indians did it for centuries.

I swallow the berries whole so no taste.

Thanks, I was referring to boiled poke. Although you take it like most of us take our medications, swallowed whole. My wife is the only one I have ever seen chew hers with a grimace on her face.

It taste like spinach, as M5 said, it has a little bit of sharpness to it. I like greens, and Poke is my favorite.

My Mother would take left over Poke and mix in our scrambled eggs (think eggs Florentine).

Bacon grease is customary, but olive oil is good too.

You have to boil it, drain it and then saute it in a pan. I like a dash of garlic in mine.

I find Its very close to spinach but with the added bacon grease its is better.

Is there anything that isn't better with bacon grease?
I like to take hot bacon grease and pour on fresh leaf lettuce as a "salad dressing". We call it wilted lettuce.

I think different peoples affinity to the poison is different. Cooked, you should be ok. The berries have the least poison. the right person could have some serious issues from eating any part of it. Birds can eat all they want.

I've heard that it effects some folks personality. It makes them cranky, stubborn, argumentative and just down right hard to get along with.

Dash, just how much of that stuff have you eaten?

Deer will eat the berries and if there are a lot of berries then you will find purple deer turds.

I've never tried it, but my grandmother used to mix some poke leaves in with other greens. I know a lady that cans it. There is also a funny story about that too. About the time that the Pope at the time a few years ago, was traveling around, my mother asked the lady if she had been watching the Pope on tv. The lady is like me, she is hard of hearing, she thought she said poke. Her response was yes she had been out around the barn picking some poke.
