Came across this old drawing of a plunge dip. My, thank goodness for progress. Can remember our neighbour having one, he had a big herd of Afrikaners. We always went to watch them dip and waited in anticipation for the first one to take the plunge, they had huge horns and just fitted in the dip. My parents had about 40 cattle and backpacks were used. They were sprayed until totally wet, even got a squirt in each ear :D .

Anyone remember them?

I remember my mother talking about dipping sheep, same principle I guess. Used to when I was a child our Southern States store had a dog dipping day. One point they even advertised on tv with a catchy little jingle, Dippy yor dog.
 
We used to have a sale barn that had an ally set up for dipping. The barn has been gone for years but the concrete where the dipping lane was still there until a few years ago.
 
I know where one of thos is..abandoned in the National Forest, tho it's not that elaborate..a hold over from this county's free range days of the 50s and 60s. They just cut pine saplings down and made temporary traps each year.
I saw it used once when my dad stopped and we watched, but I was too young to really get involved, as we didn't have any free ranging cows but there were many hundreds of them running the National Forest for awhile..ear notched hogs too.
