To come over to the States next summer to see friends and relatives in Louisiana for a week, then we thought of travelling to another State for a week, anyone got any suggestions on which one will be good for site seeing and historic adventure? Thought of San francisco to see the Golden Gate, or New York for a few days, not sure on them though.
 
Depends what your interests are. I live in new jersey about two hours from nyc and really have no desire to go whenever I have too. Its dirty people are ruder than ever but its an experience to see it. You could do a national park trip say to yellowstone. How about a trip to Las Vegas. Even if your not the gambling type the casinos are incredible and there is tons to do everyday. I would assume you are going to fly somewhere and not looking for somewhere local to Louisiana.
 
Vegas was my thoughts also, you don't have to gamble, the strip and the casino's a show by themselves. The Grand Canyon is a few hours away, Los Angeles is a couple hours away, San Diego is a couple hours south of LA. If you must, San Francisco is a short flight from Los Angeles :D I don't like SF to much once you done the bridge and Alcatraz, it's all down hill from there.

Virginia has all kinds of history, as well as the Shennandoah Nat'l Park, Thomas Jefferson's Monticello and Poplar Forest. Home of George Washington, James and Dolly Madison. There are many historic Civil War battlegrounds. Goergoe Washington Nat'l Forest. Caves and Caverns all along the Blue Ridge mountains...Luray Caverns, Grand Caverns, Endless Caverns. During the summer there are numerous county fairs on any given weekend. if in Northern Va, it's just a jump away to Wash.DC area to see the Smithsonian and all the exhibits there.

Just my 2 cents. :)

I will put in a plug for Tennessee. You will not find a more beautiful state as far as scenery and diversity of scenery from the Delta plains in the west to the rolling hills of central Tennesse and then on to the breathtaking Smokey Mountains in the east. There is Nashville and it's huge countrymusic scene and we are rich in historical sites all across the state. The people are friendly and we have good sippin whiskey ;)

I have never been to Virginia myself and would sort of like to go.
If I could just figure out a way to go without having to lose time and not have to travel.
I think I am waiting for somebody to invent one of those contraptions that looks sort of like Jogeephus' smoke house only it's a time machine. Just dial up what you want, hit enter , and wham-o, you are there.

The national parks here in CA are pretty awesome for people who've never been. Yosemite is only a few hours from San Fran so you could do both easily in one week. If you want to do Sequoia or Kings Canyon national parks I can give you a guided tour myself if I can get freed up. If you have any interest in agriculture there is tons of it in all its forms in between SF and the parks and alot of tourists are kind of shocked at how much of it they enjoy seeing.

Now you're talking my way to travel!!! If I had one of those transporter thingies from Star Trek I'd be all over the place!

Been to England twice, Scotland once, Ireland once, drove to Ca. w/my sister, been to NH, Ma, Vt, Conn, RI, NY, NJ, NC, WVa. -----I was younger then.

I also forgot to mention that Va also has Ja,estown, one of the first settlements in the USA.

Thanks everyone, there is a lot to ponder about, I e-mailed my cousin in North Carolina and he has requested that we go to see him in our second week, as he and his wife are retired they will take us around a few places. It would be nice to see him again as I was about 17 when he left Blighty.
Ryder I know what you mean by a time shifter machine, that would be real cool and easier on the flights. and I wonder would your luggage go astray as much? or one of those in Star Trek if it wasn't to hard on the bodies molecular structure, would be awesome, you could go home each night, that would be great, sleep in your own bed and not have to pack as all your clothes are there around to choose from, my idea of perfection.

To be honest though, 1 and 2 are so far ahead of the others they are hardly worth mentioning. Let me know where you decide and I'll point you to some must see attractions.

The eastern cities are actually much worse with that shyt than SF. It's kind of old hat there now. Back 20 years ago it was terrible.

Maybe so, but unlike San Fran, the eastern cities don't allow public nuditiy as far as I'm aware.

I have never been to a nice city. Good luck on your trip.

The nicest city I've been to was London, but that was back in '78 and '79. At that time, it was a very nice city and they didn't have that giant ferris-wheel thing. I liked it more than NYC and Boston, I found it easier to get around and it seemed cleaner. I was in San Fran back in '84 and it seemed more like a huge town to me than a city. It wasn't too bad.

My nephew just returned from London 2 weeks ago. He travels all over the world for his oil company job, and said London today is the most expensive place he's ever visited, but other than that it was a great city.

:nod: London, next to Copenhagen Denmark is one of the most expensive Cities in Europe if not the World. Must say though it is a very clean City now as they have ploughed a lot of money into it to clean it up, a lot of it was to impress for the Olympics, and while they were on prices went down for quite a lot of things, now they have gone up and twice the price. I agree the London eye (Big Wheel) has spoilt the look of the river side but the views from it are breath taking. I love London Town just not the people in it. :( so much to see and do, I have had 55 years of looking around and still find new things to see and do.
 
If you like music come up to Memphis from La then just go anywhere you want. San Antoine is very nice and lots of other good places to go in Texas.
Haven't ever done it but Amtrack offers a ticket that you can get off and stay however long you want and then get back on and go to the next town you want to get off in. Have ridden from Memphis to New Orleans and its not pleasant.
 
My faves in the USA:

1. Ozarks in Mo and into N. Arkansas (spring/fall)
2. Seattle, WA (summer)
3. San Diego, CA (anytime)
3. San Francisco, CA (just about anytime)
4. New Orleans and small parishes (for the food and architecture, and not in hurricane season or for Mardi Gras).
4. If I had a couple of months to do it, I'd go through many of the Civil War battlefields and museums in the Southern states, and then into upstate New York in the fall.
