Those bulls would have been right around a year old when those pics where taken.

I have never noticed a calf with a kinked tail out there... guess I'll have too look a little closer.
 
That one looking at your brother - looks like mom trod on it sometime. I have the odd one from time to time; found most of a tail switch, vertebrae inside, the other day, presumably from the same sort of cow-treading incident.

You have nice cattle. :)

I have been sitting here for a long time trying to remember of what well-known bull Davis Yr Blackbird 558H was the dam! I can see the bull in my mind's eye, but can't remember his name. She is one of the remarkable Angus dams in the Breed! Beautiful udder!

In reading the posts concerning Davis Yr Blackbird 558H (this spectacular cow pictured at the beginning of this thread) I realize that most of you are really not aware of what a tremendous female she is, so I did some SEARCHING, and I think that this "copy" will establish her quality and veracity that she is one of the most valuable and high quality cows EVER in the history of the Angus Breed! Ladies and Gentlemen - you are in the presence of ROYALTY!


Blackbird 558H
The $260,000 one-half interest top-selling female of the 2004 Riverbend Sale, this longtime breed-leader for end-product merit records a progeny IMF ratio of 112 and a progeny REA ratio of 105 based on 106 head evaluated by ultrasound. Currently, 558H records the 22nd highest IMF EPD, the 24th highest REA EPD, and the 28th highest %RP EPD among all Angus dams.

I don't know specifically about the ratios, but some of the "Info Yap" that Sales Managers attach to Catalog Lots in some of the Riverbend and other Breeder's Sales may have it, athough I can't say for a certainty. With THIS little lady, it really doesn't make much difference inasfar as to whether or not she would fit into a particular mating program!! :banana: :clap: She is good enough to start a NEW program and line-breed to HER!

I believe and I may be a little off on this but her WW and YW ratios are somewhere around 100 but her calves tend to be a little more moderate framed than some others at Riverbend but most of the cattle I am comparing them to are from G A R Precision 2536. But for a cow that is 11 going on 12 years old you can't help but be impressed. If I'm not mistaken she was never ultrasounded herself. She has built her record on proven performance.

Coming from Texas I had read about her and seen pictures but having the opportunity to work with her and her progeny in person was definitely the highlight of my cattle raising career thus far and probably will be for my lifetime. Cows like her are once in a lifetime type cows.

You could walk through a set of calves and easily pick out her progeny. She is impeccable structurally and really passes that on to her calves. But the most impressive calves are by 036. That mating is one that works well and works every time. When I was there we flushed her I believe twice. I know one time she gave 11 embryos. And they told me that you are looking at a $250,000 flush based upon percentages that take and 50% being heifers. And they have flushed her pretty much every month for the last 3 to 4 years. She is too valuable to have a natural calf.

She is definitely a legend.

The only really well known bull by 558H that I know of off the top of my head is the ACF New Design 0321 I think is his number. There are several outstanding bulls out of her but I don't know that many of them are in stud. There are however many impeccable daughters like ACF New Design 0308 and Riverbend Blackbird 2331 just to name two off the top of my head. But she does have 117 progeny scanned through ultrasound so far so I am missing just a few ;-) .

ACF New Design 2062 is a popular stud bull by New Design 323 while ACF New Design 0321 is sired by 1407 and is starting to build up test data that is very impressive. I was told by several people there at Riverbend that the 0321 bull is a very very good bull.

She looks like a real good cow, I was just curious on what she has actually done and who she is. I don't know black pedigrees all that well, but you do hear about certain cows that are sought after. I take it she is one of them.
 
Doc, or others far more experienced than I, please excuse my possibly appearing like the little boy who asked about the naked emperor: I've always thought the sort of tail setting the cow has would not be particularly acceptable. Obviously it's not a problem for anyone, based on your appreciation of this animal, but is that perfect spinal structure?

You are a very astute observer! This particular characteristic (High Tail Setting) is a topic of discussion in a lot of breeder's minds, and can be justified by the fact that it is a Moderate Heritability trait, and that it MIGHT (Just MIGHT) make partuition more easily accomplished - or - on the other hand, it might make birthing a calf more difficult. And the argument goes on! The important factors to consider are the production records and the EPD's of the cow and how she "nicks" with certain bulls, such as 036. The fact that she is 'valued' at over one-half million dollars also carries some weight.
