What makes you think they look content? It is summer in Tennessee.

In the midst of a typical summer, cattle are generally less comfortable than humans at the same environmental temperature. Something to consider is that cattle begin feeling the effects of the heat at about 70 degrees F. What that means is that producers need to consider the fact that their cattle are probably hot even when they themselves are not.

In the initial or early stages, when cattle start to suffer from heat, the early signs are not always apparent. Feed and roughage intake may drop a little but the animal may be fairly uncomfortable way before that.

When I see black cattle in a hot climate I can say they look extra hot. Black absorbs more solar radiation.

Probably not what alot of breeders want to hear.

Solar radiation is a critical component that can lead to death loss from heat stress. Typically, proportionality more black hided cattle die during heat waves then other hide colors.

Well, duh, aren't we full of NEW information.
Pretty much everyone that's been in this business for any length of time know black hides make the cattle feel the heat more.
But, the cattle pictured were eating! nice green grass - no tongues hanging out, no mouths open. They looked perfectly content.
"They look hot. Try a different color."
Who are you to tell them to change breeds? None of us have that right. And besides, the poster WORKS there - NOT HIS CATTLE.
 
I am ~100 miles SOUTH of the Tennessee line and most of the cows down here are black and most of those are Angus. There have been straight bred Angus herds here registered and commercial all my life. I have a college classmate who is raising reg. Angus ~90 miles to my South. You are going to have to go further South to make the argument that it is too hot for black cattle or Angus.
 
brandonm i think if you travel on down to fort payne ala, you will find more angus cattle on the farm of Randy Owens. along with a very nice herd of hereford cattle

Your a smart a$$. They have access to shade pretty much all day if they want it. I turned them in the work pen for a while because it bests the heck out of swinging the weed eater. These cows has spent there whole life in Tennessee. The heat and humidity is a normal thing for them. If you brought down some black angus out of the upper mid west or canada in June you would be in trouble. Kinda like if you work an office job and you get the wild idea your gonna throw hay bales all day one weekend. You will be puking by lunch. If you spend most of your day outside your just uncomfortable not about to have a heat stroke.

That bull has "fallen off" a little. This is first year turned out to breed. He came out of the test the first of March. He had a few months to cut him back on grain. Then he got turned loose May the 15th.

I think the "noassatall" look is from several generations of calving ease bulls.
