I wish you had [posted that a week sooner. This past weekend we hunted both days. For several years now, we have been working on getting our pheasant population to a huntable level, and decided this year we would shoot pheasant a couple days this season. We let a couple hunting with us take a rooster each. If you are around next time we hunt the place, you would be more than welcome to come down and shoot some. Do you ride, Kenny?

We saw a few on the west side, but I think they like corn fields which are more on the east side of the Dakotas. There was a place selling hunts north of Sturgis but I doubt they are there anymore. They planted a lot of birds and some escaped, but they were never well populated.
 
I’m guessing the Dakotas or maybe Kansas.
I used to love pheasant hunting. As I got older and the birds got fewer it changed. I’d get excited just to flush a rooster. Then that even stopped around here. I maybe hear one once a year now.

It is too hard and rough to walk this place. Or it is at my age and my knees. Most of the quail plantations down here offer pheasants, but they are pen raised. They will go out a couple of hours ahead of the hunters and set them out. I don't think you would like that...I don't. Even worse, there are places down here that offer tower shoots.

I think you are right to look to the mid-west grain areas, to find huntable wild pheasant. Back in 1990,, I went to southern Illinois with an associate to hunt deer back at his home place,, and they had wild pheasants there. You mostly hunted the edges of harvested cornfields. Very flat land with dirt rows around the corn fields, etc. I have been trying to think of where it was. I know we went to Memphis then turned north., going through the tip of KY. Coming back, we took 24 on to Nashville and came home that way. I know from their farm, it was about 30 mins to hit 24.
Are you looking for a place to bring you own bird dogs?

When i was young we had quail. Adding wild quail to a Pheasant hunt would be great.
We don't have dogs but would pay someone with good dogs to guide us. But i want totally wild birds.
I bought a Browning 16 Auto from 3waycross here on CT probably 10+ years ago and have never fired it. He had put a different barrel on it especially for pheasant hunting.

A gold trigger, "Sweet 16"? Yep, that used to be standard equipment for quail hunting around here when I as growing up.

I use to hunt on Ringneck ranch in Kansas. They furnished guide and dogs. Around Tipton and Conway. They have mixed bag. Pheasants (wild and released). We always limited out. They have housing and meals.
 
We have some pheasants here. Not near enough to support some traveling here to hunt. I like seeing them so I never shoot any of them. I have a Browning Auto 5 in 12 gauge. One of the last of the Belgium made Brownings. Shot a lot of pheasants with it in the past.
Thinking about it I have a friend from church who shot the only one shot here in years. He had an old dog and wanted to get one last hunting trip with the dog. So he came over and got one bird which was all he wanted to do. He was a happy camper and didn't hurt the pheasant population any at all.
 
Pheasant hunting has caught my interest this year. East TN has only preserve options, so we are going to one this weekend to just try out using their dogs on released birds, might go back with my trained waterfowl lab and see what she can do.

I would love to make a trip to Dakotas or similar and hunt some public lands. That is on my list for 2026 to plan a trip like that.

I've got a recently acquired Remington Model 31L 16 gauge I want to try out in the uplands.

I have known that for ever. My Dad always referred to them with a term which now would be considered very offensive to some one of Chinese ancestry. Dad and uncle shot lots of them (the birds).
