Pfizer weanvac program

Has anyone used the weanvac program? If so, what is the process as far as verifying the calves have been vaccinated? Also, how can you ensure that the buyers know the calves have had the shot. I understand there is a card that can go to auction with the calves. I will probably send them to OK City. I appreciate any information on the process, including your thoughts on any additional profit at sale time with these type of vaccination programs.

This is a good question. We were looking into it ourselves on the http://www.selectvac.com/ website. We are already basically doing the program it requires but am concerned that because it isn't really agnoledged (sp) in our area that it won't be worth it. There is a lot of good benifits that we see but not sure if you take your animal to an auction (like ours) that doesn't "support selectvac" via the websites info then is it going to be worth it and will the buyers know what it is.

The enrolling with Pfizer isn;t a big deal, just takes seomtime. To be source, age, process verified in MO you have to have a premises ID, also no big deal. The sate has reps, in our case a gent from the extension service, that verifies your recording keeping etc. After you are a pproved, each year you have to reapply. But if you have been approved once, as long as you don;t skip reapplying for a year you stay on the approved provider list.

I bought 46 select vac steers last year. several were pulled and doctored 1 died. when I called phizer they said they offered no garantee. I was very dissapointed. I don't belive their program has any benefit over a regular vaccine program from another company. To me phizer cattle cattle are worth no more than any other weaned vaccinated cattle

They're arent worth anymore, IF they are all weaned and vaccinated as they are supposed to be. Pfizer doesn;t have control over a producer being untruthfull about having done what they have claimed to do. Theoretically you could trace the calves back to a producer and know not to buy his calves again.

The enrollment form asks for the number of head, separated into steers and heifers. What if this number changes between enrollment and sale time. For instance, I haven't decided on the exact number of heifers I will retain. Also, how closely do you have to follow the marketing date? My date could vary up to two months based on rain, rate of gain, etc. Thanks

You can edit it after it's submitted. I would put in the higher number and guess at the earliest marketing data you think you might use.
