"PETA compares the idea to "sin taxes" like those placed on tobacco, alcohol, and gasoline for their costly effect on the environment and public health. The revenue generated, they propose, would be used for education."

We all want new taxes on someone else.
Tobacco taxes, for example, are paid only by the less than 25% of the population which smokes.
Alcohol taxes are harder to raise, because a much higher percentage of folks drink, many of them while paying their taxes.
A tax on meat will go over like a lead balloon, but PETA's vegan membership will love trying and they got their weekly dose of publicity.
