we run about 100 cows and have used only black angus bulls on them. Just wondering what u guys would recommend using to add some performance to our calves as well as a good choice for keeping good replacement heifers!!

I would look at some moderate framed Gelbvieh or Simmental bull. If you are conerned about the color, both breeds come in black as well. Just find something that compliments your cowherd and gets you where you want to go and, most importantly, something that FITS YOUR ENVIRONMENT. I also wouldn't rule out a moderate framed, deep and wide Red Angus. You would keep the benefits of Angus and also take advantage of hybrid vigor. But that is the way I would think, not knowing more of your operation than I do. I am sure you know more of what is best for your operation better than I do.

The traditional BWF (using a Hereford) is always a good cross. But if you are looking for the best increase in weaning weights, you should use a continental breed. I (of course) would recommend a moderate framed (which most of them are now) Simmental bull. You could easily get a black one. Pick one with a Calving Ease of +10 and you can safely use him on your cows and heifers.
MARC research says that Angus is the #1 British & Simmental is the #1 Continental - so the cross is a natural. Simmental will increase milk production in your replacements, and improve Yield Grade in your carcasses, plus give you the increased growth.

What ever breed you choose i for sure would keep it BLACK,
I know this might affend some but, around Ky. blk cattle are still bringing the high $ to prove my statement, just attend the sales that are everyehere now cow/calf pairs that have this color are most likley to bring 2-3 hundred $ more. It is happening at every sale state wide.

Were are you when all the other breeds are bring crammed down our throats. Over the past year there seams to be just as many raising some other breeds as there are people raising Angus.

If you've got an english herd cross it with continental and look for a bull with maternal traits......... however your bull calves may not be where you'd like them but you would have good replacement heifers.

Since your in Canada, have you looked at any black charolais?

Yup, a nice black Simmental bull would do you a great job.
