Peanut Hay

I bought some peanut hay for my cows this year. I was just wondering what the protein % should average? The last time I tried peanut hay it was full of dirt, this here stuff is real clean with lots of peanuts. Been years since I used it, but the cows love it and they are looking real good. They won't even touch the coastal hay and it's 9% + protein.

We've been baling peanut hay for 40 years here, but i took my first hay sample last week and am waiting to get the results back. There's a good bit of
variability in peanut hay, like grass hays, depending on conditions, but i've heard protein levels have been tested at 7%-14%. No way to know unless you test. $20 here in georgia. cows like it regardless, and i have less waste than i do with well fertilized Tift 85 hay...guess candy tastes better than brocolli.

I'll report back when my samples come in.

The coons really like it to. Seen 4 coons in the barn and their eating the bottom bales up. Beat 1 of our barn cats up good to.

In the winter of 2007-2008,after the drought of 2007, I fed some peanut hay. The bales of peanut hay were black and slimy on the outside,but the cows ate up every last bit of it. We have always fed the green vines and bushes from the peanuts that we grow for boiling to the cows and they love them. I spoke to the fella that I buy hay from and we are going to try to find a farmer that will let us bale the peanut vines after harvest this year.

Depends on how many peanuts are in your sample. The hay itself won't be that high in protein but the peanuts help raise it. Mice, coons and everything else will get a lot of them.

Peanut hay round here has gotten too high 45 to 50 a roll. When we grew peanuts we would put up several hundred rolls a year. Cows will eat it first. We have had some horse founder before. But jackass`s will eat it with no problems
