I recently bought a 5 acre piece and want to use it as a pasture .. I want to put a well on it not really sure whether to go cheap and get shallow or drill a well... Which way should I go?
 
Gotcha.. I guess the well guy should know that.. I just dont want to pay more for something I don't need to and i dont want to pay for something twice lol.. I just wondered which is best the well at my house is 600 ft deep never had any issues . They hit water 47 feet down if I remember correctly.
 
Shallow well is only 25 ft around here. Water table at about 6 ft most of the time. Any deeper than that and you need a submersible pump.
 
Like dun said, it depends on the water table. 25 ft here is a deep post hole. I have a 32' large diameter well. It will pump a 6' tire about half full every day. Not sure that is 200 gallons.

Then again if the 5 acres were here, you could simply haul water to a cow and calf for the 4 month grazing season and move them out as the pasture would be pretty well used up.

Yea, I have water totes but I planned on keeping that pasture for my artificial insemination experiment of 3 calves I bought at a auction. I want to install a automatic waterer.

Depends on the shallow water and if you want good water or just water....it's a local thing.
 
I drove a shallow well down to 25 feet with inch and a half galv pipe . And a sledge hammer . It pumps fine took me about half a day . I had a well drilled 100 foot with a 4 inch submersible pump . It will fill a 200 gallon sprayer in 10 min . How much water pressure do you need ?
 
I just need it to fill troughs maybe a 50 sprayer to spray the fence and ditchline until i get automatic waterer installed thats about it.
 
Wouldn't need a pressure tank to just have a submersible pump wired into a float switch and pump the water directly into a stock tank.

If an automatic waterer is installed then will need a pit with a pressure tank in it. Also would need a pressure system if extending the water line any distance in the future, providing the well has enough capacity for that purpose.

About my sorry 32' well. It is set up with a float switch. Also a mercury sump pump switch wire into the submersible pump. I just turn the pump on and let it do its thing. No danger of the pump running dry because it shuts itself off when the well is dry and comes back on again when the well recovers.

If setting up a submersible pump this way, be sure to remove the check valve on the bottom of the pump so the water can drain back and not freeze the exposed line to the tank in winter.

thanks john I went to the county today to get my well permit and it was $300.00 for some knuckle head to come out and ask me where i want the f..... well and draw it on the plat and leave. RIDICULOUS....
