I had mares tale in my pasture some kind of bad last year and it seems as its coming back or some other broadleaf weed is all over my pasture.. I sprayed forefront r&p twice last year and here it comes again. I am planning at the end of next month or april to overseed with perennial rye and some more ky31... Does anyone know of something that can definately kill those weeks and send them to hell not to return again ? How long if I spray with just 2 4 d or something like that should i wait before overseeding ? HELP... SOS :help:
 
2,4-d barely made the marestail sick and it came right back with a vengence. The only thing I found that really kicks it is Grazon,problem is yu have to wait 3-6 months to plant anything after you use it.
 
Thanks dun... Do you think it would be possible to over seed it heavily and choke it out? or atleast control it better so I can spray it later?
 
If nothing is there that you want to keep, hit it with roundup and a week or 2 later drill the rye. After that you can control the broadleaf junk with 2,4-d, or even Grazon once the rye is up good. Grazon and remedy mixed also knocks the crap out of spiny pigweed. That was the other curse we had.
 
I will keep that in mind.. but unfortunately i have a good stand its just certain spots which are like the size of a full size truck so I dont want to completely kill everything... There is some sporatic plants i see sprouting different places but one place i am gonna kill completely and then disc it completely up and rake out the roots with a landscape rake.
 
Depending on how many of those truck sized spts you have, you might want to consider burning them down with Grazon and not reseeding, or burn it down with roudnup and reseed something. The scattered stuff you cna hit with Grazon and it will keep newer stuff from germinating around it

I thought all weeds did this, regardless of what you spray them with.
There's a saying related to thistles - one year's seeding seven years weeding. Some seeds like gorse or ragwort they reckon can be viable and germinating for fifty years.
Every year of good control reduces the work required to do the same next year (I hope, because I don't want to have to put in this much effort over and over again). To some extent, a good stand of grass will prevent germination and establishment of weeds. Round-up plus grass seed seems to work well.
 
Dicamba is definately worth a shot I gotta see if anyone has it around here but I would have to spray that and it kill the clover seeds I just planted.
 
Not familiar with VA, but suggest you get the weeds under control before trying to establish clovers. Here we plant clover in the fall. I saw two crimson clover seedheads this morning. First I have seen here in Northeast Texas this spring. I saw a lot of it blooming in Houston area (200 miles south) over the weekend.

Dicamba can be bought as Weedmaster or one of the generics. No residual which helps with planting legumes in the fall.
