Is there a big difference in germination rated between ky31 and Orchard grass ? I planted a area with orchard grass and a area with ky31 at the same time and the orchard grass is about 3 inches tall after all this rain and pretty thick... the ky31 is sparse and the blades that came up are only maybe inch and a half at best. Has anyone experienced this ? both are mixed with white and red clover. think I got bad seed? The weather was warm in the 70's for the first 2 weeks i planted then got cold and dry again now its warmed and we had rain for 2 days and the 2 fields are like night and day.

I think there is little difference in the germination and if there is a difference Orchard grass to me is the weaker plant in the area where I live. I have not planted any Orchard grass in more than 5 years as it is not as hardy here. Normally within 3 years the Orchard grass has phased out. To my surprise my entire farm this year has an abundance of volunteer Orchard grass and for some reason I do not understand the fescue is lacking in its normal height. On the fescue the leaves are short and the seed head is at least 10 inches less than normal height. Rarely do I plant fescue in the Spring and I get a lot better results on Fall planted fescue. I attribute the success of the Fall planted fescue to having a better chance of developing a good root system before dry weather hits.

Yea... I am actually thinking about going back and dropping more fertilizer on it.. to see if that may help.

How warm has it gotten now? Fescue seems to grow poorer when the weather is warm then OG does. All of our grass is heading out, the fescue about 6-8 inches and the OG about 12-14 inches. We had 80-90 degree days in march and that really screwed up the growing season.

Being this far into the growing season for the fescue I would postpone the fertilizer. I would let the fescue struggle forward and hope that it survives the Summer. If the fescue does survive then apply the fertilizer in early Fall. It is IMO too late to get a response for this season.

I was just talking to a fertilizer applicator guy today. He says that with the weird growing weather this year that even the people that applied fertilizer earlier in the year aren;t really seeing any response and putting it on now would be a waste. But not everyone has had as screwy spring weather as we have around here.

Dun it has been getting down into the 30's at night and up to 70's depending on day ... I talked to some other guys around here and there having same issues they said this year is funky... one guy said " I use to be able to grow grass on a dogs back but not this year " I have also noticed on a different note that weather has screwed turkey habits up from what they normally are this time of year.

weather here is wierd here too. We've had 3 days in a row in the 20's for lows anwinds been 15 to 20 every day . new seed is sure takin it's time.

I agree. Don't remember a year like this. I think it got too hot too fast. With the windy dry period and temps. in the 80's we had from mid March until the 18th of this month the grass here hasn't done well at all. Seemed like it just couldn't get started. I hope it turns around soon.

Yea, I am cutting the rye I planted over my soybean fields just to make sure I get some hay for this winter im only cutting a 100 acre field but man this grass situation has me worried.. I have never seen anything like this
