i am in ky and wanting to know what would be a good pasture mix for young calves. will supplement with feed but want to get as much out of pasture as possible. this will be used in spring and summer. the calves will be 2 and 3 wieghts.

One pasture that can be divided into smaller areas with cool season grasses and clover and another that can be divided into smaller areas with warm season grasses and clover. Then you can rotate them through the different fields and still have some grazing.

For your area I really don;t know. If you don;t have any grass now, one of the friendly endophyte fescues along with clover would be my choice for the CSG. In this area there is only one guy that is doing very well with bermuda and it's been in for years. Maybe a grazing type of alfalfa without clover would work, around here it's pretty much Big and Little Bluestem that gets the nod for WSG.

I am in zone 7. I manage to get my fescue to see me through June and into July most years. It is mid July and August that whips me. I have been slowly establishing Red River crab grass to meet these hot periods. Most years the mid July/August period is also dry to very dry so I initially seeded the low lying bottom land which is typically less dry. Thus far, this is working for me.
