Pasture advice needed

If i want to have 10 head. 5 cows and 5 calf. And I have 12 acres of good pasture. Would it be best to have two 6 acre pastures for rotation or one large 12 acre pasture?

I'd break it up as small as possible .. say 1 acre pieces and move them everyday or everywhere day if the grass is good enough.

The grass is really good. Last year it got 80 4x5 rolls on the first cut.

You can run a strand of high tensile wire the length of the pasture and use poly wire to block off part of the pasture . Or make a ally with the high tensile and make pastures off of that with poly wire ..

grass will never keep u growing with 10 cow/calf on 12 ac.its not haying. its trampiling and pooping.and digging. in 6 mos you will have 10000 lbs of cow n 12ac

Should i have smaller pastures with rotation?

maybe..but if it don't get wet a lot..it wont grow...

Looks like he is saying 5 cows and 5 calves ? If they calve in Nov Dec and sell by June I think u can make it .. I run 40 head on 60 acres for 8 months out of the year.. but we average 50 inches of rain a year ..

We average 45 inches in my area. But yes, i plan on keeping the cows(5) and selling the calves in the fall. Even then, i wouldnt have the cows on pasture in the winter. I keep them on 2 acres with a barn.

5 cows with calves on 12 acres would not be any problem in my area.

At a minimum at least divide it into fourths or else I could show you some pics of what it looks like in a couple of years with no rotation..... That will give you (4) 3 acre lots, a big improvement over 1 or 2 pastures. Unless you are going to really try and max it out, this would be the most bang for your buck/least amount of fuss in your situation with 5 cows/calves in my opinion.

With the smaller pastures, how often would you rotate?

If you go 4 three acre lots rotate once a week.
