I don't mean to be a pain in the you know what, but I know nothing and asking all these absurd questions I learned an awful lot. I get answers as if I wore a dunce cap, and when it comes to raising cattle in Rhode Island, and not being able to get good answers here, I do where the cap well. I learned an awful lot, and when I repeat things that I learned on this sitepeople listen as if I was there Vet. We do not know too much here. There are people that own cattle, but so few really take care of them. My theory is if I own it I want to give it the best care. I also believe in mother nature taking care of things, but sometimes conditions are not at there optimum and we have to step in. I want to know everything so I don't make any dire mistakes.

And, by the way, to answer the simple question, I will send pictures. I spoke to my daughter, who raises goats, and makes goat cheese, that she cannot keep up with, and she will take the pictures for me.
Her cow is coming over this week to keep my bull Pasquale happy.
Well I hope this gives you some background of why I ask so many questions, I think I can take the dunce cap off now.
Thanks for all your answers

Lance was my dog who is not around anymore, the greatest dog I ever had A fawn Great Dane. Would not leave my side.

As far as I'm concerned, you're fine. Better to ask a lot of questions than have neglected, sick or dying cattle. My only request would be that you relax a little regarding Olivia's impending calving! :) ;-)

Anyone with a cow named "Olivia" and a bull named "Pasquale" deserves all the answers he gets.
I have a few questions for you:
Is "Pasquale" the sire of "Olivia's" soon expecting calf?
Have you bought the cigars yet? What brand?
Can we help name the calf?
Have you had any sleep?
Does your wife take turns watching "Olivia"?
Do you hope for a bull or a heifer?
Have you thought about raising the calf for the freezer?

I am glad you've asked many questions. I know I have learned from the responses to your questions. As my teachers would say "If you have question about something, I am sure someone else has the same question. It's just a matter of who asks it first, or who is brave enough to speak up and ask the question."

is that a sand dollar in your avatar?

Sure is. The ranch I work for is Sand Dollar Ranch, and that is the logo and brand. I posted more about my job on the Coffee Shop board, under New Job.

Hey I don't mind the questions. I have gotten to look at it like a reality show. The life and times of olivia.

To answer the above questions
Pasquale is the sire
Yes I bought the cigars. Partigas
Yes of course you can help name the calf
I am very relaxed now I have many of the answers to my questions.
Yes I sleep OK, I do rush over in the AM to see if anything has happened.
I am hoping for a heifer
I thought about raising the calf for the freezer, but if that is the case then naming her or him will be off.

The chickens, turkeys and pigs are no problem to put in the freezer, but my cows they are a different story. They have become very attached to me, almost like my dog. I have to get over that soon, if I want some good beef.

Now you're getting the hang of it! Rushing over in the a m- nothing wrong with that at all! I got a 4 yr old ready to calve any day now also.Last thing I do before I leave for work is get on the 4 wheeler and go check her. First thing I do when I get home from work is get on the 4 wheeler and go check her. I check her again 5-6 hrs later before I go to bed. Other than that she is on her own. Hopefully, everything will go alright for you, and once you see how uneventful the calving usually is, you will be more relaxxed next time. Just hang in there and keep your fingers crossed and let the cow do what she does best.

Learning to relax comes with experience. When I first got cattle, it was 2 pot loads of OLD bred cows. I penned them and got up every 2 hours to look at rear ends with a flashlight. Looking back, now that I have relaxed, I realize I created a lot of work for myself, and I should've just let 'em go. They were having their 10th calf! They knew how to do it without me being there.

lancemart, i think you are doing just fine. thats what these boards are for and i too have learned alot from them.

Lancemart, I don't think you are a pain. Right now you are enjoying waiting and watching the cow. I don't sense you are upset about it, you have been anticipating and waiting which can be fun. If you are like me, you work so many hours that if you don't make your second job a hobby, then you are going to get soured quickly. If I don't look forward to messing with the cattle, then I am going to be in a mess.

I am very excited, because this is the first time. There is something about the cattle, I don't know what it is, I don't check on my bred pig at all. Something about my Herfords that is very interesting and relaxing to me.

Lancemart, you're not a pain...I think everyone is looking forward to Olivia's big day, I know I am...and we all learn from these posts...no matter how many cows (or whatever) one has, I believe everyone gets thrilled over a new arrival. It IS a big deal. Here's to a safe delivery and a healthy calf!!!!
