Overseeding with Ryegrass

I am in Louisiana and thinking ahead to next year: Can cattle be left on pastures that are overseeded with Ryegrass or should they only be on it a certain number of hours each day?

They can be rotated on it. But ryegrass needs rain otherwise it doesn't do squat. More so than a lot I other grasses
 
I plant some that is fenced off for late winter , but I overseed the pasture that they normally stay in. If it gets rain at the right time I find that they continuosly graze it all winter and don't require as much hay. After the fenced off is established, I let them in occasionally to fill up.
 
My cows have been in rye grass for the past 8 weeks I move them to a new area every two days so they are in knee deep rye grass all the time and they are doing great . I still keep a roll of hay in the feeder and everynow and then one Cow will take a few bites . But I haven't seen any ill effect of to much grass .
 
Are we dealing with annual, or perenial ryegrass here?

I have no experience with either-- other than what the books say... Honestly, don't know anyone in our area using it either...

We have perenial here, stuff is worthless. Not much leave and by the time it starts to finally get a little height it shoots out a seed stalk and the leaves turn brown.

Depends on the type of animal. Stockers and calves can stay on annual ryegrass all the time. When i had cows i use the ryegrass as supplement for a few hours each day when feeding hay as the ryegrass is slow growing in winter. Once spring rolls around and cows are nursing calves, leave them on as much as possible as the ryegrass should be plentiful. No bloat issues
 
If you leave cows on pasture in the fall that is overseeded it will not produce nearly as much. You need to fence them off until it is established if you can. I use crop land to seed in a relative clean seedbed and keep the cows away until it is well established and 6-8 inches high. I would think in your area ryegrass overseeding would be common place.
