I'm ready to tell Direct TV to kiss off. But before I do I need to get an outside digital antenna that will get me good service. I'm about 60 miles from most of the broadcast antennas in DFW. Any suggestions?
 
http://antennaweb.org/ is a good site also. We paid a guy $100 to install our antenna, antenna included, 2 years or so ago. He back fed all through our dtv wires. The cable he put up comes through our closet and plugs into the wall for the booster in the bedroom. Only miss history station, and some of the Fox news. Weather Channel was good, but I hear it is not the same anymore. Oh and Hook, Get Tv has good movies. Older Westerns lately.

When I saw the antenna, I was like, will that work? Sure does and very well! Easy in the storms too. He said they use these on travel trailers and retirement parks. Good luck on your quest. Hopefully your contract is up. The only issue we get is some broke up picture in really heavy rain.
 
Yep, contract is up and we had a technical problem today. Ticks me off that I have to pay to replace their equipment or pay a 50.00 service charge. This was the third battle over that sort of thing and I'm tired of fighting it. Sure gonna miss the History channel tho.
 
Yes hook, us too with airplanes. If a big one goes just right between here and christmas it cuts out for a split second. Beats no tv with dtv in heavy rain, even with the new nd improved dish.
 
haven't had cable for yrs..all antenna..wingard makes some great units. were about 60 mi out and get about 30 channels.50 if ya include religion/Spanish stuff
 
Haven't had cable in 10 years at home, I watch a little at work- just enough to realize it is the same thing over and over. We watch the old shows on me tv also, way better writing back then and I don't have to explain anything I shouldn't have to.

Slick, if you miss a channel, you can get about anything on the net these days and watch them at whatever time is convenient for you. I don't have anything I follow except some sports. If college goes pay for play, I will have even less.

We have shows we watch regularly on the satellite channels and I know we'll miss them. Lots on regular tv too. We will quickly adapt, especially when that bill doesn't come every month. :lol2:

How far are you from the transmitting tower(s)?
All my stations come out of Houston and I am 45 miles north of downtown, but looking on the website, I found all the transmitting towers are located in a 2 block area in a suburb of Houston--Missouri City which is 62 miles from me. Don't know how many stations I get--probably 35-40 but that includes 6-8 Mexican language stations, a shopping channel and 5-6 religious channels. I do get the hated "no signal" in bad weather sometimes.
I used to have a Winegard HD7084 but it didn't work very well. Don't know what model Winegard antenna we have now but it's better than the old one.
 
MapQuest says I can drive 35 miles to get there, so I guess as the crow flies it would be maybe 25 miles. The antennaweb.org site can give you info on antennas. At the bottom is a link to a company that sells and explains antennas. Right now is a great sale going on. This is where I researched before we went antenna. digitalhdsource.com

Go for the outside antenna you can watch channel 13.1 and 13.2 and you will never miss the history channel. Where you are and have plenty of attic space you can mount the antenna in the attic. put a rotator and boaster on it and you will be good to go.

Going to go for an outside antenna because I'm using a 20' mounting pole. Don't want to have to use guy wires with anything taller. Thanks for the tip on the channels.
 
Well, I finally got the antenna put up last night after being without TV for a week. It's a Winegard and looks like I should pick up signals from the moon because it's really large. Told Direct TV to stuff it because I'm tired of being nickled and dimed when their equipment fails, which it did back on the 17th. You guys were right! We are getting great pictures and there's a ton of stations. I think I'm going to add a Roku to the system for movies.
