The wife and I were going to Flea market this morning about 6:30,when I saw something start to run out in front of me.It stopped and crouched down. But it ran out infront of the car behind me,and got hit.I didnt think much of it, but when we came back it was in the road dead. We slowed down to see what it was. It was an Otter. I've hunted, fished, trapped, camped and ran the woods from daylight to dark and never saw an otter in the wild.My grandad is 78yrs old and said he'd never seen or knew they were any around here. I guess you never know whats running around in the woods.

We have them around here Oscar. They are a friendly little critter that is for sure. I was on a canoe trip in the BWCA once and a family of them came up to our canoe as we were crossing a lake and bobbed around the canoe! 8)

Otters are my favorite animals to watch. I love em even if they do eat all my fish.

I have never seen a river otter in the wild. When I lived in Ak, saw sea otters in the ocean a bunch of times. First time I saw one, I thought it was a dog ~ they are so big. The ones up there are not afraid of people either. Not such a bad life I think, floating on the water eating sea food!

I happened up on one in the river swamp last year. Saw some movement in the water and thought it was some ducks. I slipped up where I could watch them but it was an otter eating mussels. He was neat and would sometimes float on his back while he ate his snack. He sure did put on a show for me.

You ought to see one run out across the snow, run like crazy and sliiiiide, run like crazy and Sliiide [on it's belly]  all the way across a frozen lake.

The only ones I've ever seen were at the zoo and they are the asian otters. I just never thought they were some so close to us. I just figure they were more of a northern thing.

We have plenty of them here in the Thicket, they will move in on a pond and wipe your catfish out.
I like my catfish more than the otters.

 Are You using the right recipe :???: :help: :cowboy:

We've got them here now too. Had one run out in front of me last year. It was leaving the creek and running up into the woods? Maybe gonna join the bear? :D

There aren't many otters around here and I never saw one before '06. This one showed up in a stock tank and proceeded to do me the kindness of cleaning out some mudcat which are a scourge in that tank. He/she/it seemed to think I was mealtime entertainment when it swam up and gave me a look see. Luckily I had my camera close by.

We've got 'em too. Fish and wildlife are 'restoring' them. They're thick enough to be hurting fish populations in small streams and ponds, but apparently not thick enough for a hunting/trapping season. Mink are almost nonexistent now where there used to be plenty. They can't compete with the otters.

Yup< It's a trade off Ya Know :? Not enough food source for all the predators, :cry2: survival of the toughest.

The Missouri Department of Conservation is known as a leader in animal management with their restoration of deer and turkey in the state. However, what they did with otters should be viewed as criminal. The otters had been wiped out a long time ago because of the damage they did and the value of their pelts. The MDC restored them and now they are everywhere. They will move in on a lake or pond full of fish and wipe out every fish in a matter of a few days and then move on to the next one. They only eat a small percentage of what they kill. The creek that runs through my place used to be full of smallmouth, catfish, largemouth, goggle-eye and a native strain of rainbow that isnt found anywhere else in the world. Now the trout are almost all gone and there are very few fish left in the creek. There needs to be a large bounty on every otter you can kill so we can get rid of them, again. I don't see anything cute about a pile of uneaten dead fish and an empty pond that you spent money building and stocking or a creek that was a great fishery for myself, my father, and my grandfather, as well as so many others until the otters destroyed it.

Oscar, we own some property over in Cleburne county and a couple of years ago I was sitting about 20 feet up in a deer stand on a small steep hill overlooking the perfect deer hunting place. 3 hollers came together with a small 4 foot wide branch winding its way back and forth thru the main holler. Just as it was getting light enough to make out the general outline of the trees, branch, etc.... I hear what sounds like a couple of deer coming up the creek. Not moving fast but the splashing seemed loud in the quiteness of the new daylight. After about 10 minutes of listening to the splashing I caught a glimse of something in the creek. I first thought it was a beaver since I have seen them before about 3/4 mile downstream, but it was too long and slim. The otter worked his way on up past me in the branch and went out of hearing. A couple of hours later he came back down the creek. I watched him the whole time with the binoculrs and the scope. This is the only time I have ever seen one in the wild.

2 otters moved in to a neighbors small pond last summer. He had stocked 500 catfish in the spring and was feeding them heavy.

Those otters ate every single catfish in that pond within a 2-3 week period of time.

I helped him seine it after they left. We got not one fish.

We let a local trapper come on our property and he usually cathes 5 or 6 every spring. He has caught 2 so far this year but he said the market is flooded with skin and fur right now.

They look so cute! I thought we had some on our creek on the bottom, but after seeing this picture, i realize that those must be beavers.

No otters over this way. All we have are a few beavers and some of those swamp rats (Nutrea) that migrated over here from Louisiana....next thing Gerald will be telling me how to cook one of those too. :lol2:
