Organic Fertilizer

A neighbor gets all the sludge from the local treatment plant. It is de-watered, thus a black product about like coffee grounds. The stuff is tested for heavy metals. I don't know what other tests they may run.
All of this is with permits from the state environmental dept.
Seems to be a good deal for him. He invested in a holding pen. Sludge is trucked to him and he applies with a regular manure spreader. He has been doing this for ten years or more. With today's fertilizer prices, I'm considering trying to cut in on him. :?

What's the drawback to using chicken litter? Guessing it's considerably cheaper than petro-based fert. Wondered why everyone wasn't using it?

I'm not using it cause the chicken growers wasting doing what they where suppose to. You could find dead chickens in the litter. This has been out lawed.
Now days in north Alabama EPA is keeping up with where the litter is going so I'm told. I bought a house and 25 acres last year. A chicken farmer has 11 chicken houses on all 4 sides of me. I'm not kinding. Any window I look out of I see his houses. Before I bought this place I wanted to make sure they have'nt been putting his crap on the place. I sat down with the farmer and we had a good talk and he showed me the log that the EPA requires him to keep. The log keeps up with where his litter has gone and how much. I understand the EPA is suppose to approve your place to spread litter on. You cant spread it within so much of a drainage or a property line. Got to stay so far from the house.
