Opinions on some bulls

Hi
Just like to get some opinions on a few bulls here. Can give you more info on them if you like... for now tho, first impressions? (I won't name them at this point, as they are not mine.)

I like their length, they seem to have good bone and all have a good topline, but they are all lacking alot in the depth department. They need way more guts and substance to them. Makes them look awkward because they seem to have alot going for them otherwise.

But I've said it before, all that air between the gut and the ground don't weigh much.

Could be the angle of the photos. I agree on the middle bull re. depth, though his progeny have done well for the breeder who's using him right now.
I will say the top bull doesn't look too flash there. Once again though, his progeny are some of the best performing in our state.
As for the bottom bull, here's another pic of him. (Yes, I have a soft spot for him, he was one of my babies!!)

For some length, depth and substance, how's about this fella?

Sorry, guess we have different opinions on cattle. I don't like him one bit. You see how his sheath is the deepest part of his body? He shouldn't angle up to his nuts or angle up to his chest. The 'floor' of the chest should be pushed down lower than the sheath, not pinched up narrower. It means he doesn't have the capacity for all of his internal organs. His topline is sway-backed too.

No sir, I just don't like that bull. But if he's workin' for you, have at'er.

lol, guess we just have to agree to disagree! I can tell you he's not sway-backed, has heaps of capacity, and you're the first person I've heard criticise him. As the judge at the nationals said, "He's a bull that meets ALL the markets". btw, he was Grand Champ at the biggest show in Australia.... BUT you are entitled to your opinion.

I hate to pick on a bull that has won such a big show, but I'm going to have to agree with purecountry. They both kind of have that gut like the "great" Sonny bull had that everyone went so crazy over.

I personally really like your baby bull. It looks like he would sire some super moms with the build he has. I also like the top bull quite a bit. The middle bull I'll pass on. Just My opinion.

Sorry, I think that bull pops a pretty fair loin and that is why you gents think he is swaybacked. :)

I'm so tired of arguing back and forth about what bull looks good and what doesn't, but here i go again, can't friggin' help myself....he looks sway-backed because he is sway-backed!

Look at him from the hip forward - he dips down - are ya still with me? - then he rises back up to his shoulders. Kind of the same pattern you see with his gut, OK? That is a sway-backed bull if there ever was one.

I don't care how many ribbons and grand championships he's won. He is not an appealing specimen for the breed or beef cattle in general. However, with that said, maybe those are the kinds of Shorthorns that have developed through environmental pressure and a variety of other factors in Australia, giving them that structure, much like that of the Brahmans and such in hotter climates. Structure is quite swayed one way or another by the way animals have to survive. If that's the case, I'll shut up and rest mine. If not, I say I wouldn't use any of them for reproduction if they were dropped in the yard in the middle of the night with a bow tied around their neck. JMO

Miss Killala i took me a darn good look at yur bull an i got ta tell ya mister purecounty has its number. now ifen ya went an got yur heart set on em i aint tellen ya to shoot em. just be sure ya breed em to a cow that aint got the same dang problem an ya got yur self a fifty fifty chance of getten a real gooden out o him.

Those are fine looking bulls. The two show bulls are standing on alot of bone with plenty of guts and neither is pinched in the heart. I like the 5 bull better than the 43. 43 is real soggy but he looks unlevel from the hooks to pins could just be the picture. A picture can make a good bull look bad.

bward... I agree with you on the second bull, he's not one that I'd ever use but as I said, the bloke that's using him seems to be doin ok.

discussion on the bottom bull.... fair enough, but to see him in person he certainly doesn't have a sway back. I don't like the picture.

ONLY-BEEF... it's not my bull, none of em are, and unfortunately I can't use him on my own animals.. too close. Have a look at my other post, there's a red heifer there by the top bull, half-bro to baby.

ccc.... you're right, a pic CAN make a good bull look bad. Lot 43 is the one my boss bought.. he's got a hell of a lot of bone, and the best temperament I've seen in any bull. he also held his condition real well when he came well, and did the follow up on approx 50 cows, as well as an AI mob. Only lost weight when he got a stake in the hoof... nasty, his leg was 3 times its usual size.
