Opening Bid for Simmental Bull

An elderly gentlemen is liquidating his small herd of Simmentals due to poor health. I'd really like to get my hands on his 2-year old bull. Obviously, I want to get him as cheap as possible. The current owner said he'd accept "any reasonable offer" but didn't want to "give them away". The guy sounds a little prickly, and I'm afraid he'll kick me out of his barn if I start in with a lowball.

Question: What should my opening offer be to get a good deal on the bull, without insulting the owner and blowing the buy?

The bull is 2 years old, registerable, but not currently registered. Confirmation is damn good but not spectacular.

He also has 3 cows, 2 heifers and a yearling bull. Opinions on a fair price for the lot?

lets start with the bull.since you like an want the bull lowballing is no good.id say the bull is worth $1500 to $1750.now the 3 cows id say they are worth $1200 to $1500.the 2 heifers an young bull $1000ea.id prolly offer him $9250 for the bunch.all he can do is say no.im assuming the cows are pretty young.

I think the bull market is down just a bit. But a good bull is a good bull. Got any pictures ? Don't forget the new Trich laws........that
could be an expense someone has to bear.

In my opinion, he should be putting a price on the bull, not asking you (the customer) to set the price. If he refuses to do that, check the "bulls for sale" ads in your local newspaper or livestock publications and see what bulls are selling for area. Attend some bull sales, call around to other purebred breeders and ask about prices on bulls. If he doesn't have papers on the females, they're commercial cattle and should be priced like commercial cattle.

If he's so prickly, will he have a BSE done on the bull? How do we know how old he is if the bull isn't registered? Has he been tested for the genetic defects that the Simmental Assn monitors? Or if he's black, has he been tested for the Angus genetic defects that might have bled over into the Simmental breed?
