Well, one of my good 11 year old cows was running a little late,.. she just had a really nice heifer calf.. if she does a really good job of raising it it could be a keeper.. I've kept 2 replacement heifers from her, one is a first timer and having a little bit of a hard time, the other is 5 and is a great cow (that has a replacement candidate heifer as well).
 
Always good when you cut one a little slack and they reward you with a nice calf. Hopefully she will be a keeper .
 
It's kinda my fault she's late.. 2 years ago I thought she'd been bred the first day with the bull and I pulled her out for a while.. turns out she wasn't. She has ONE flaw... she has her head on the wrong side of the fence at all times.. but other than that she's a great momma.

one of the heifer calves from a first timer were in the corral with them.. I noticed the heifer had milk scours this morning.. I suspected... then got proof in the afternoon.. she was stealing milk from the old cow (she gives quite freely, and has lots).. so the heifer was round like a barrel, and wasn't used to that kind of good eating... Between the two calves they've only nursed down the two right quarters.
 
It's so satisfying when the good cows have good daughters in the herd! I have a cow with a similar history, nice daughters in residence, two already in the breeding herd.

Calving starts here in October, after we get through this dreadful cold bit - it's really tough here, it's almost zero Celsius outside, 5.30am.
 
32C here today.. but VERY smokey... there's a forest fire 30 miles south. I took some pictures today, they're all back in the corral, I'm sorting out a few of the cows that are growing wheels in the fall, saving my pasture and keeping those ones on hay.. One of them has a pretty nice heifer.. waffling about whether I should keep her, I was thinking of eliminating that line completely. Meanwhile one of the calves I thought was going to look really dandy as a replacement has kinda been falling apart at the seams.. she looked great a month ago before they went on pasture, but now she looks very average... Another heifer I'm a bit scared of keeping looks great, but is going to have a heck of an attitude... everything will have to be done her way, and she's going to be a fighter.
Last night I had one of my best steer calves with a REALLY swollen eye, today it's like nothing ever happened.. I'm grateful for that, but I'm still curious as to what it was... I think he's prone to getting crap in his eyes.. he has these bulbous bug-eyes.. to the point I call him Buggy.
 
Do you find, if you actually keep them, that the heifers which fall apart for a while sometimes get it back together? I often think of them going through a gangly growth phase.
I've been culling out bad attitudes lately, a couple of quite good cows have just gone on the truck, just a little too bothersome for me to keep around. Money's good at the moment.
I have a pearler of a replacement heifer out there who has looked fantastic all the way through and gives me enormous pleasure to see. I doubt she'll fall apart and I hope she lives a safe life so I can see her fulfil that obvious potential.

Some do, some don't... I'd rather have calves that don't ever look like they fall apart!.. It is really nice when a promising heifer turns out to be a great cow.. I have a couple of them that really did well.. You remember the picture of the two calves nursing on my old cow Rosie from about 4 years ago? (they weren't twins, they were her daughter and granddaughter)..
Those two have turned out to be amazing cows.. not all that big but they both have steers that are top notch this year.. I think both of them will be weaning steers 60% of their own weight if I keep them on there for 205 days.. I'll try and get some uploaded, but adbucket.. I mean photobucket has so many ads it makes it impossible from here
