Was over at Ranchers and one of my old pics was on the main page. My black cows were pretty good. LOL.

This was about 3 years ago, I believe.

I guess I'm a contrarian at heart and a bit of an egoist.

I saw a once great breed going downhill fast (Angus), and another breed that I thought had a lot to offer, especially in the areas important to me: Fertility, doing more with less, cows that don't need babysitting and decided to give it a go.

It has been a slow go. I have been at it 3 years and my numbers are no where near where I thought they would be. I never raised registered Angus, just commercial. I have sold off about 70-75% of my commercial cows and replaced them with Registered Hereford. I am down about 40 head total on my numbers. I just can't get the few Herefords I have to have heifers and all the Reg. Herefords for sale are not worth buying or are overpriced. So my little experiment is in slow-grow mode.

I had also used some Hereford bulls (see calves in picture) in prior years and was always pleased with the results.

Maybe I'll get there. Maybe I won't. I am having fun trying though.

I think you and I are like the Lone Ranger and Tonto on this one. We have been getting 6 bulls born to every 1 heifer born. I understand the slow-grow mode and empathize with your frustration.

You aren't the only ones. We are resorting to embryo transfer on one of our lines.
