old farmers almanac for weaning calves

last year my calves and cows didn't do their normal bawling for 3-5 days after weaning like most years. It got me wondering if I weaned on the dates that the Old Farmers almanac claimed was one of the days to wean. does anyone have the 2024 almanac to check beat weaning dates in the next month or so? I would like to see if it makes a difference on stress level at weaning time.

And it makes a huge difference in bought calves i have noticed also.

I never believed in it until someone actually explained it to me. If you wean by the dark of the moon the calves have more trouble seeing at night and will just go lay down instead of walking fences bawling for momma.
Now I swear by it.

I just put an date in my calendar for that Sep 22 weekend to work cattle. I knew we would need to wean calves around that time so might as well go for it. It may happen if I start planning this far in advance.

Probably wean bull calves that weekend. If we precondition and put in weaner tabs the 15th there will be almost no bawling on the 22nd.

Trouble with that explanation is that dark of the moon just means moon is growing smaller. The night can be brighter in the dark of the moon than it is in the light of the moon. I know that does not sound right, but check it out.

I used to try and wean by the Almanac and rarely had a sick calf. Then weaning turned into whenever my crew was available, and the weather cooperated. And I ended up with a pneumonia tsunami. Was it because I didn't wean on the "best days" or simply shyt weather? But the last couple years have been pretty easy, and I have zero clue if the days just happened to fall according to the Almanac. They're still gonna bawl an average of 3 days.

My observation. Beef cows bawl for 24 hours when calves are separated. Jerseys cry for a week.
