Anyone have any ideas what old barn lumber is worth. Have a barn approx. 100 years old outdated and made for horses that I am thinking about having torn down and use money to help paying on new one. It is mostly oak with solid 6x6 beams for posts and braces. Any idea what that type of lumber is worth by sq. ft. ?
 
You may want to check with some of your local hard wood floor companies. They use it occasionally for new floors or patching in old ones. They may be able to put you in touch with the people that re saw and turn it into flooring.
I my business I obtain some and can tell you that it is a lot of work getting this used material ready for re milling. If I had to buy it, I wouldn't pay much. One nail left in can cost you hundreds in what it can do to a blade.
If you run an add in the local paper you may get more from a hobbyist.
The planks may bring a little more as they can be used as for architectural accents where needed.

Right on.

The thing you need to do is to find the right people to bid. Look for "high end" builders and remodelers and you will most likely find more high end money.

Locally, you probably won't get much.
 
Look into how things work where you are. When we were considering tearing down our old barn, we were warned that whoever did it should be licensed and carry their own insurance for doing it. If they are hurt while dismantling it ~ your home owners could really take a hit. That was back when old barn siding was all the rage. I did not have time or the inclination to do it. We ended up burning and burying it.

There is a company in Lexington, KY called LongWood that specializes in reclaimed lumber. If they aren't interested, maybe they could point you to someone else closer. Ask for a guy named Larry if he still works there.
 
Wick, down in this area people pay big money for old barn wood. Folks are using inside new house construction, in offices, everywhere you look....they love that old gray look. Probably will bring as much or more than new lumber.
 
I don't know I got rid of an old ban several years ago and everyone told me I could sell the wood but I never found anyone.I saved all the good beams and told folks they just have them,but they never came to get them.One guy said he would take them if I delivered them for free :mad: So I just burned them.
