Think you can tell by eye-ballin' 'em? Here's your chance... Which cow is heavy bred (265 days) and which one is short bred?

Common Milkmaid...not fair.
Exhibit "B" appears to have developed her udder and has more girth. Can't see the tailhead in the pics but them dairy cows are boney anyway so I probably couldn't tell if I were standing next to them.

Ok well I'm not the great white super duper cattleman but I'm not afraid of looking like a dumby either  .

I'm gonna say A is Heavy bred and B is just a hay hog lol.

Its appears to me that A has more udder...its hanging pretty good. B looks a little tight for a Holstein thats milking

I'll have a guess at it Milkmaid. On the chance I am out guessing myself, A is heavy bred and shows more udder development but nursed a calf longer last year while B is short bred but hasn't nursed a calf in a while???????

Well. just for fun..I,m going quess different than you guys..I think B is heavy bred.

I,m thinking A just has a somewhat sloppy bag to begin with

She has the condition to have been dry for awhile, while A doesn't. She sure doesn't have the udder to be 20 days from calving though. I wonder if MM has the dates correct??

That's exactly what I was thinking. I'm no guru, but I believe that "A" is heavy bred and "B" is the short-bred. Her big gut looks too uniform and symmetrical, like a hay-belly. While "A" has more of an udder, and lop-sided look....much like my Jersey when you look close at her.

20 days is that all she is ... :?: It almost looked to me that the calf had dropped somewhat.

Ollie as you well know some cows never do get very well conditioned ..Perhap A could be one of them cows.

All the smart money is sitting on the sidelines till milkmaid reveals the answer then they'll say " that's what I thought".

Well don't tell! ;-)

Not yet anyways.

Yes, the heavy bred cow is due February 20th. She's only just started to bag up; not enough for anyone but me to really notice (and only that since I see her daily, lol).

It's hard to tell from the pictures, but A seems to have the bc of a milking cow, plus she dosn't show a 9 month calf in her gut.

B shows the bc of a dry cow or bred heifer.

But pictures can fool you.

A's loin looks more dropped to me. I'll stay with my pick and show eveyone how stupid I am.

...and the calf is lined up in the birth canal and wouldn't show on the sides.

Both cows are the same age; approximately 6 y/o. Both in milk over a year on the past lactation. Both nursed calves past lactation. One is currently lactating and feeding calves, one is dry.

Don't know if that will help or make you folks more confused.

She has more than B . The trouble is , she could almost be wet and sucked out.

MM is that tit dip on the B cow? I guess I should just be quiet before I look more stupid!
