Ive decided that tomorrow I will spend my afternoon volunteering at the Astrodome doing whatever I can to help out. I feel that I need to do something to help, but I dont have any money to give or to buy stuff to give, so I figure my time and work can be just as helpful. I feel that everyone should give something, whether its items, money or time, simply because there is so much we take for granted, and never even realize it. I dont know what they will have me doing, sorting through items, serving food, or actually going around trying to help people locate their family throughout the stadium. I know a lot of my friends that have gone in have been assigned to play games with some of the children living in the Dome, whether its sitting and playing cards, or outside throwing a football back and forth. They need people to sit and talk to people, but are giving more of that to adults. A few of my friends have also been assigned to walk around and find someone looking for family, and to walk around with them trying to help. Only one person I know has been successful in that, and he said there is no greater feeling when those people find their family after being seperated for a week.

Anyways, I know it will take an emotional toll on me, but I know it will be so rewarding in the end.
 
It will be a good experience for you - there are some things that you will see that will make you realize how fortunate you are.

Trying to get a few of the fellas convinced too. The Good Lord is laying it on me and I cant sit still. We've got tractors, skid steers, chainsaws, generators, welders, compressors, nailguns and host of other goodies. The biggest obstacle right now is fuel situation and knowing exactly where we should go. Last but not least are we gonna get robbed blind because of the stuff we have on hand. Rumors are that a vehicle with fuel on board is a hot ticket.

Here is an update. I got turned away from the Astrodome. They said no one under 18 may volunteer to help there. May I also add that they are very short on volunteers? So I cussed at them a little, told them they were neglecting the victims by turning away help, and went off to the George R Brown Convention Center. They said come on right in, any help is welcome. I waiting in line for about an hour just to register to volunteer there, then got to work. They were taking any help they could get, no matter what age the volunteers were. They werent letting little kids go around helping people, but they had them sorting through clothes and such. Through the day I was part of the greeting crew and serving food. Greeting people what we did was just say Hi to them, welcome them to Houston, and occasionally give a hug to some. The good news is that there is tons of food, water and clothing. They have a "shopping mall" set up in the convention center that is like a huge garage sale. People come and walk through look at clothes, shoes, games, and toys and take what they like. For the most part, morale is pretty high, much higher than youd expect.

It was a great experience. There was some old guy in a wheelchair being pushed around by his wife. This guy was going around saying "Help me, send my wife back to New Orleans, she is bo legged and crazy". Of course, all joking around, but its good to see that people are still joking around having fun despite all that has happened to them.

Tomorrow I will be going to the SPCA to volunteer there. Everyone is volunteering at the shelters (in fact, at the GRB there were more volunteers than evacuees). People have forgotten about the SPCA and they are in deperate need of help. They are getting tons of livestock in, trailers full of feed, and for the most part have no younger people around to do most of the physical work like unloading trailers. I have lots of experience with animals and I can help more at SPCA than the shelters.
 
I tip my hat to ya. Shows a lot of character to be turned away once then jump right back somewhere else.

I'm guessing that despite being short handed, they were thinking only of your well being by putting a cap on the ages of people that can volunteer.
 
Hey Tex, you can go volunteer at churches. The age limit is 16. I tried to take a bunch(60) of our kids to the Astrodome too and was told the same thing. We ended up at a Babtist Church in Pasadena that was housing 200 people. Very rewarding to myself and the players. We got wore out unloading supplies all morning, but it was worth it.

I admire your efforts as well. It says a lot about folks of your age. Just when us older folks think the younger generation is going to pot someone steps up and proves us wrong. Good Job!

My hat is off to you for attempting, it certainly would have opened your eyes and made you be thankful for what you have (I'm not saying you are not thankful, however it gives you a whole new perspective of life).
I was one of the fortunate ones that was allowed to volunteer this weekend, a group of us that was put together through the University of Houston for my dauthers 4-H club had already received our parking passes and ID badges. I will admit I was a little apprehensive after watching the media and hearing all of the "rumor" of disarray.... We were told that the age was 16 and not 18 my daughter just turned 17 for all intents and purposes I told her whe had just turned 18....and I am thankful she was there to witness the mass amount of people that didn't have anywhere else to go or call home. Not one single person that I served was disrespectful or indignante towards me or the other in my serving line the children were polite and appreciative we were allowed to serve them as much food as they wanted and most were saying to save it for someone else and not to waste it. The funnist thing they wanted was plates of sliced dill pickles, I asked the kids why pickles and they said because they liked them, finally I had an adult as me for a plate of pickles and I got the answer I had been looking for, her response was "it's the small things in life that you take for granted and everything NOW is appreciated" she said she wanted a pickle so bad it was killiing her.
The stories they told and injuries they had were unbelievable I saw several reunions between people that had been searching for relatives and it moved me to tears I thought it was my mothering instinct but I saw grown men clapping and crying and cheering at the reunions.
There have been a few instances of trouble at Relaint Center (Astrodome) but the police presents is almost overwhelming nothing like what was seen at the Superdome.
All I can say is my daughter and I have a whole new outlook on life and people as a whole.....
 
Withe all the negative ink that our young folks are getting these days it is a pleasure to see that there are those that care and share their time and energy to assist our neighbors in need....my hat is off to you!

We actually had several parents pull their kids out from volunteering becasue of all of the reported rumors of car jackings and fights, rapes and gang activity. I felt safer at the Astrodome this weekend than I did on the 45 minute ride home, all I can say is its better to be safe than sorry but on the other hand their child missed out on a emotionally enlightening uplifting experience. I saw a side of my daughter I hadn't seen since she was younger and she thanked me for letting her go and experience the people of LA, MS and AL.
