While my husband was checking cattle yesterday, a Canadian goose just fell out of the sky into the pasture. He checked it over and found no marks or evidence of trauma. Do you suppose geese have heart attacks?

I dunno...but I don't much like the sound of that. I'm a little concerned about this avian bird flu stuff...and west nile. Ok, concerned isn't the proper word...paranoid describes it much better!

You might also consider, besides what Alice said, that yes he might have had a heart attack. Or he could have had a heat stroke from flying too close to the top of the atmosphere with the effects of global warming, or he could have breathed in too much ozone or carbon dioxide. Only an autopsy would reveal the real cause. I would put him in line after they finish with Anna's.

It never occurred to me to worry about bird flu and West Nile because of the extreme cold here. Some coyote is probably doing the autopsy about now.

I was getting a roll of hay out the barn a few days ago and found a flat red fox under one of the rolls, what's the chance of that?

Yup, you're right...I don't like bats...bats are rats with wings...rats have teeth and claws. I cannot imagine why nature played such a cruel trick and equiped rats with wings. Makes me shudder thinking about it.

I dunno...but if I'd found one, Backhoeboogie would have heard me scream all the way into Hood County. I hate being startled with something like that. Just the other day I was getting feed out of the big bulk tank and about 3 mice came thru the auger. I say "about" 3 'cause...well never mind that.

Anyway, after I calmed down and located the bucket that went flying, I went up the hill to put the feed out. Apparently 2 more had landed in the bottom of another bucket. I lost it.

You would really hate what happened to me last spring. I almost gathered up a snake instead of an egg. My husband shot the snake. Then I went back to the same pen to another nesting box and almost gathered up another one!!!!

I needed a drink after that one. Two in one day is really too much.

So Alice, what do you think about those "cute" squirrels running around the yard?

Seems to me they are rats with bushy tails.

Yes, as a matter of fact they are...as are rabbits...but at least they run from you! Rats and mice have gotten to complacent around here...

Thank goodness I'm not having to deal with bats!

Lammie,

Are you a city transplant? :help:

Country folks know not to step or put hand in an environment without looking first. That is a no no. :) If you choose to continue that act suggest you watch venom ER. Convincing info. there. ;-)

I was thinking about that today how the media picks out something terrible and does a bunch of stories about it and has people believing that the sky is falling. When the shock wears off and people get tired of hearing about it they come up with something else. I remember radon gas, black mold, e coli and of course bird flu.

bird flu is real.....there has been a big case of it here just this week, the most famous poultry people have had a case, and their plant has been closed, the birds were bought from a farm in Hungry, of all places. Turkeys from Hungry sounds far fetched but it is true. It was the Bernard Matthews poultry sheds in Holton. go to BBC NEWS and you can see for yourself this is not a wind up.

I think all of those things that I mentioned are true. It is just that the media here blows things waaaay out of proportion.
