October slump????

The slump may not be like we have seen in the past but yes there will be cheaper calves in october. Cows also.
Big reason is supply and demand. The weaned, vaccinated calves will sell good with unweaned off color calves selling cheaper.
If there is 500 cows in the sale instead of 100 they will be cheaper also.

At least in this country the cows start coming out of the hills. Calves get split off. And cull cows start heading to town in numbers. The majority of calves going to town in October are fresh off the cows. The weaned calves start go to town in November

4-5 wt steers took a $.50 to 1.00 hit this past friday compared to 2 weeks ago at the local sale barn... They were 4.30 to 5.00 2 weeks ago, and were 3.60 to 4.30 this past Friday ?????.. 6-7 wts were up $.50 . Go Figure... Have no idea what that was, I did not go as I tested 4 straight days last week, yesterday and will again today... Sales have been alot smaller with the heat and no one bringing in cattle off pastures.
We were thinking to take some odd stuff this Sat to the one sale barn where things like the couple of Holstein steers that were raised on nurse cows, usually do better since there are more of that type buyers there...
The one barn has gotten to where they take off more days than the old owners ever would have thought of... we get good money for the black steers there, if they are well matched etc, but take a beating on singles and odd stuff...

I would think it will stay good thru Labor Day but one thing I've noticed over the last couple of years is that backyard grilling even in winter and even by with city folks that don't know bbq from squat has really taken off. There are huge groups on the internet that talk about nothing else. Any kind of beef and pork ribs are the #1 & 2 choices.

7-10 years ago the general public didn't know what a brisket was. Now every amateur back yard griller has a smoker too.

You can thank social media and pellet grills for that. A big hold up for urbanites was always where to get seasoned smoking wood. Now one machine does it all.

Here records have been set everyday this week. With the rains we have had and if the predicted rain for the next nine days come in 2 weeks many will be drilling wheat. If the wheat does well I see a slight drop but not much. At least a 1/3 of the calves that are usually sold in October and November have either been sold or will be over the next month. Barn managers are saying the fall runs will be lighter. Many of the cows that are usually culled in the fall are gone. Right now the docked for weaned calves is so little it doesn’t pay. We plan to sell off of the cow.

I thought the exact same thing but was in a hurry and didn't type it. Pellet grills and those curly cue mustaches go hand and hand. 😄 The stand around the grill on the weekend talking about the best meat to smoke or grill or what ever.

If it sells beef... I'm all for it.

Well the pellet grills do make you kind of pussified and I would much rather have a wood fire but it sure is nice to put on a brisket at bedtime and not have to get up to check the fire every two or three hours. Set that baby at 200 degrees and it will be ready for a brisket and egg breakfast.

Ya I don't use one but don't turn down invites to eat from one. 😄

On the way to work the other day I found an almost new pit boss in the ditch. Looked like it slid out of a truck and stopped in the ditch. Very little damage, I put it on Facebook asking if anyone lost something on “x” road. So now I have a $500 smoker lol

Prices were good at 2 sale barns this week... heard that one buyer was not at the sale last week where the prices took a nosedive on the 4 wt calves. We are not going there as we don't have any good "groups" to sell... singles and 2 and 3 groups do not sell as good there...

We sorted some today; picked and chose, and have the 7 odd beef steers and 2 holstein steers, to sell and 11 of the "bottom end" heifers... couple of decent ones with bad attitudes.... one would have stayed, but she got stupid acting in the barn and went over the gate a 2nd time while working them/ studying them... and she is going on the truck too.
Turned 14 more straight beef heifers out on grass where we made hay on part of the field; and got everything out of the barn that was weaned .
Also put 12 hereford x holstein heifers out at another place that weigh 350-450 probably... Got from a dairy farmer I test for that used a hereford bull on a group that needed to be bred. They are all "pets" bottle raised.... will see how they grow out for now... They will be getting grain and pasture.

Got 3 new calves on the ground out of 1st calf heifers, the other 7-8 are starting to bag... Fall calving cows just started, got the first one the other day... most are about a month off... had 4 places with bulls in at pasture last Nov/Dec/Jan.... one place only had a few and they are the ones starting now...

We have been missing the rains, and are quite dry. 50 miles south they go 4 inches in 2 hours this past Wed.... we could use some of that for sure... Maybe this weekend.. get things to start growing here around the barn lots, for when we start bringing home cows/calves from pasture late this fall.
