Got away from the combine and tractors for the weekend. We met up with another couple and represented the New Windsor Rodeo at the MRCA finals in Springfield, Missouri.
NWR was the event sponsor for the saddle broncs.
We got to visit with some great folks in the business and feel like we got some great exposure for our rodeo.FD5AEA45-8EAF-4526-8A0C-1CFECCBDD8BD.jpeg732BDEF1-530F-4169-9398-C68AA45DD4C1.jpeg3E8518FC-56B5-4E7D-AC68-F1704DE3E356.jpeg

@Dave back when you were riding what were some memorable prizes?
We would like to give something to the winners at our rodeo in addition to a check, but we kinda figured guys probably have a shelf full of belt buckles and spurs.

Hire a couple highschool kids from 4h or FFA for a weekend of farm/barn help. Everyone needs a hand somewhere on the farm. Even to pick up trash along the fence line on the road, or wash or brush or muck etc....

Back in the day they didn't give out much. I have one belt buckle and a saddle that doesn't fit me. One of the guys I traveled with won the world once and the NFR twice. Something like 5 or 6 times runner-up for the world in the bull riding. In his living room he had a wagon wheel. It had a glass top and between the spokes were belt buckles he had won. As much as he has won there weren't that many belt buckles. They give better buckle to kids who mutton busten today,
I think spurs are fairly rarely given away.

How 'bout a nice hat? Or a sweet knife?
I looked into custom.22 rifles. Henry will make a sweet little lever action 22 with custom engraved stock.
I thought it was pretty cool. I never bought it before the whole board but I got mixed reviews from the people I mentioned it to.

Our stock contractor holds a saddle bronc and bare back event in the spring. Last year we donated a pair of spurs to the winner of each.

The contestants are from all over the country and Canada. Got to be something that's easy to pack or be shipped home.

We talk about rodeo cowboy Psychology. What does it take to get these rough stock riders to decide that our rodeo is the one they want to travel to that weekend.
Used to think that if there was a big enough party afterwards with enough Coors and buckle bunnies it would draw those guys.
Others will tell you it's all about the size of the check they could take home.
While others still will only follow certain stock contractors.
Rodeo cowboy psychology, I wish I could figure it out.

I have a friend who won a lot of saddles. Something like 36 of them. Storing them got to be an issue. One day he picked out his favorites and sold the rest.
a lot of trophy saddles aren't very good unless they come from a major event from a pretty large association, NRCHA and NCHA use agood saddle maker, smaller associations sometimes just put out a bid and have the fenders stamped

I don't believe it is possible to figure out rodeo cowboy psychology.
Beer and buckle bunnies will attract guys but not the serious rodeo cowboys.

I came within a hair of winning a Henry rifle given to the All-Around one time. The guy who won it had done time so he couldn't take it. They gave it to his wife. If I had just got milk out of that cow a little quicker...... (post bronc riding. Won the team roping and placed in wild cow milking)

Money brings the top cowboys. That's it. If my adopted kid Strawbs Jones shows up say hello from Anahim Lake

I agree, the problem is that we're in corn country east of the Mississippi River not rodeo country. I just don't know what the dollar number is to get these guys to travel.

Big equipment dealers, feed stores, western wear, Indian bands, department stores, anyone who might benefit from more advertising or more business over rodeo weekend.

Yes, but the problem is how do you still take care of the little sponsors that have been with you for years? We gain a couple and lose a couple every year but if we don't lose any this year we will have 82 sponsors.
