I haven't seen any discussions of what kind of obstetric lubricant you folks use or like... Thought that should be a good topic of discussion.

For years we had a special soap, and it worked alright, but then my friend who is a manager on a big dairy told me of a powdered product, J lube I think it's called, that turns into the slickest stuff ever on contact with water.. I hadn't been able to find it by name, but when I was at the Coop I found a similar product and picked it up.. NO KIDDING that stuff is slippery... It would be the perfect stuff for all sorts of pranks too. I think it's plastic based (I don't have the bottle in front of me, I think polyester perhaps?)

I've never used it, but probably should have some on hand. I know there is one type to get that is safe for the cow, regardless if she delivers vaginally or by C-section. Maybe Lucky can shed light on the correct product to use. Apparently some are toxic if they get into the body cavity during a C-section.

Dun, this stuff is 10x slicker than oil.. and you can't wash it off your hands either...

For pranks, just sprinkle some around a "Warning, floor slippery when wet" sign... there's a guaranteed spill... There's also a good likelyhood of a broken hip, so I wouldn't do it as a prank.

You want to go fast down a waterslide? this stuff will do it!

I know, the vet uses that stuff. Mineral oil has always served me well enough and it's a bunch cheaper when it sits around for years and finally goes bad cause it's not used.

J-Lube (Polyethylene oxide) powder is what I have used for 30+ years.
I usually mix a tablespoon of Nolvasan (chlorhexidine) solution into each batch - unnecessary if all I'm doing is palpating or breeding - but if I might end up using it for calf delivery or CIDR insertion, I want the disinfectant in there.
Have seen small-scale studies indicating that use of Nolvalube, a commercial lube product with Nolvasan in it, resulted in less vaginitis in CIDRed cattle and a 5% increased AI conception rate, compared to cows that had CIDRS lubricated with a solution not containing Nolvasan.

Mineral oil... I guess it'd be OK for rectal palpation lube, though I dont think that it's as 'slippery' as OB lube products - but the repro guys always warned us not to use mineral oil as a lubricant when we were doing obstetrical work... you don't want mineral oil inside the uterus.

Thanks Aaron... I usually don't think about it, but J-Lube will cause potentially fatal peritonitis, if you pump a bunch into a cow with a ruptured uterus, rupture it while trying to get the calf out... or end up having to do a C-section and get a bunch of it out into the abdomen.

Mineral oil will also screw up CIDRs. In the past 10 years the only thing I've had to use lube for is AI. An only doing a dozen or so cows a year the expensive stuff is just an other expense. When I first learned AI (dairy goats then cattle) in the late 60s, mineral oil was all we used.

For palpation I just get a handful of cow manure and use it for lube.
Thats what our vet does even when ultrasounding. Haven't lost one because of it as far as we know. He tries to make sure it's her own though.

I've used it all - mineral oil, vegetable oil, dishwashing detergent, and yes, manure. All manure is not created equal, though! Some slicker than others.
I can get along with any/all of those, but prefer a good lubricant.
