I have been watching CattleUSA.com live auctions , interesting to see how the sale rings are designed , most of the sales are in mid-west area, not many in Tx. the way they are designed it must not be a lot of mean, jumping cows in those areas. Here in Tx. they are quarter moon shaped and narrow, with 8 to 10 ft fence with inside protruding safety rail on top, to keep them from going over. I have seen cattle fight the gate men 5 to 10 minutes before they could get them out. The auctionneer sits way up high to stay safe. One sale owner has a hot shot fixed on a 15 ft bamboo pole to help run them out. One gate man has to walk the rails around the ring out of jumping height hitting the animal to get him out. Going to the auction is like going to a rodeo. It is not as bad now as it was in the 50's and 60's they are bringing all the new fancy breeds in and breeding the meanest out of them, just like they are breeding the Texas out of us Texans. Guess I'm just gettin old and liked the ole days better. And just to top that off I just don't look good naked anymore.

brahman brought with them the need for high fences, whe got em here at the sales to they go up and back like a prison fence,, coupled with the fact on some ranches they might not see a man but once or twice a year they where like rabbits

In my observation, that wild cow situation would be helped dramatically if, as a condition of employment, all of the sale barn employees were hit about 5 or 6 times with that hot-shot on a stick before working with the animals. I can not understand why sale barn owners allow the treatment of animals that they do. It is basically an open invitation to animal rights groups to sue them. I have seen cows that have been shocked so much by the time they get to the ring that they can barely stand. The way sale barns are set up, with different pens, gates, chutes and alleyways, there is very little need for all the shocking of the animals.

Even the most casual of observation will reveal that apparently the employees just really think it is great fun to use the hot-shots and/or sticks on well confined animals that really have no way to escape.

I've seen a heifer up in the auctioneer booth once. It happened right before my eyes and it is still hard to believe. I've seen some darn near get over the 10 foot railings. Saw a cow go over a 7 foot working pen just yesterday.

Most are Brahma or Brahma cross, the meanest were Brangus, had a breeder tell me to cull any bull or cow that had a crazy gene in them to breed for tameness , back then no one did this , because it seems like the meaner they were the better calf they raised and their heifers were kept to carry on the meanest gene , not many ranchers bought registered bulls, they raised their own, kept passing it on. It was like crossing the African bee with the tame bee, just got meaner. All those ole ranchers and cows have now faded away and all you see are black ones.

Never seen a brangus go balistic but I've seen some of those old inbred cattle come to town for the first time. It's a real rodeo and nobody is safe.

I had a looney limo heifer that when I got her (at the sale barn) was calm as a clam. When I turned her tinto the gathering pen she half jumped and clambered over an 8 foot pipe fence. When we finally were able to catch her (5 tranqs) I ahled her to the sale barn. She didn;t sell till the next morning and she climbed half way into the auctioneers lap so a ring man grabbed her tail and jerked he back into the ring. She promptly flipped him out of the ring into the seats.

I don't think any of them were pure anything. The one yesterday was a bald red cow with almost half an ear or so indicating some brahman influence.

We penned another neighbor's pure angus bull while we were working the cows and he hauled him home. Bull was back before we finished working the bunch.

Seems the cow that got up in the booth back then was blonde.

Use to help my neighbor work his cows twice a year. Had about 200 mama cows of every breed...a lot of horn on most of them and a lot of brahman influence. There were at least two cows that never went thru the chute the whole 7 years I helped him....over the fence everytime and never touch a hair.

I asked the owner yesterday if he wanted me to catch that cow that went over. He said, "Naw. She'll get wormy enough some day that's she too weak and I'll load her."

He had a few that wanted to go right through me. I am too old for this!

We had a major problem with jumping cattle when we brought in some Limousine Bulls to our Brahman cross cows. They could clear 6' and barely click their heels on 7'.

That baddest cows I have seen were Charlotte X Brahman. They were just mean.
