has anyone tried giving nuflor on the tongue? i had a few guys tell me that they give half the dose subcutaneously, and the other half on the tongue. they say it works better for them than administering the full dose as a shot. (better as in quicker)

And the purpose of it would be....?

If you want it to be absorbed faster, give the dosage IM rather than SC. Chances are if you squirt half the dose on the tongue, it won't be absorbed near as well as you're hoping for. Anything entering the digestive system is at the mercy of the digestive system, which may or may not work like you expected.

milkmaid-
the purpose is for quicker response time. one of the guys doing this (that mentioned this to me) runs nearly 500 hd of cows. they have a real good commercial operation, very reputable and long-standing breeder - comes highly regarded at the auction with the quality and condition of calves they sell. they have always treated their own calves and have many times sent in specimens to be tested for identification - so that proper vaccines could be developed for treatment. they know from first-hand experience what normal response times should be - and he has no doubt that this technique speeds things up. if it didn't work he wouldn't still be doing it. i don't doubt his word one iotta - i just want to know if anyone on this forum has tried it.

the only benefit i could really see is not dealing with the knot it sometimes leaves at the injection site. and sometimes can abcess. not a good sellin' point

I've never heard of it and for the reasons Milkmaid listed I don't think I will . I may end up eating every word of that, but it would not be the first time .

If you boil it and pump the steam through the barn it will cure the whole herd of any current ill and prevent most future sickness.

They only put those stupid directions on the bottle because the corrupt government makes them.

Rob -- Not to be rude, but I've encountered quite a few folks that run more cows than I've ever seen at one time before... who have surprised me with their lack of knowledge about medical matters. Just because a person has a lot of money, lot of cows, and does a good job managing their herd (prevention) doesn't mean they know anything about drugs. I tend to be pretty skeptical about home remedies unless I've gotten a really good explanation for why and how it works.

No, and I'm having a little trouble understanding why you would even consider this approach. Drugs that are developed to be given SQ, IM, and IV generally cannot handle the digestive system and lose their effectiveness pretty quick. There is a reason for the labels, and the method of delivery - you might want to pay a little more attention to them.

I have not heard of it with Nuflor, but our vet has prescribed other similar medications to be administer half dose SQ and the other half orally. Didn't question why just did as the vet recommened and I'd agree to seeing a quicker response.
