Daughter's house burned. She is headed to Uganda on a mission trip. Flying out of Atlanta. We were going to drive her to Atlanta this morning. Yesterday when it was apparent that this snow and ice storm was coming, she decided to spend the night in Atlanta near the airport. Drove her down last night, got back around 10pm. Checked on some things at the vet clinic, then went by her house to turn her dogs out for a break and back in the house for the storm.

She got a call from 911 at 5:30 this morning telling her a fire had been reported at her house. We headed over there and it was bad. Lots of fire trucks, but too far gone. Everything lost - house, clothes, vet truck, everything. Warm in Africa, so she only took a light jacket. Women wear dresses in Africa, she never does except when she goes there. When she returns and gets back to vet work, she will be missing scrubs, boots, some keys, cash, old memories from her youth. All gone. The junior simmental association gives these nice brass swiss cow bells with big leather strap and buckle as prizes to the top overall at some regional and national junior shows. I think she had 4 of those. But not any more.

Water to the barn comes from the house, so no water now. Her friend came and took the horses this morning. I know some people go through this and understand. Can't even comprehend all that has to be done. Probably a year to get back to normal. All the neighbors ask what we need them to do. I give them all the same answer - We don't even know what we need.

I am just thankful for this storm. It kept her out of the house. RIP - her pets.

I'm so sorry to hear this very sad news. Your daughter will be in my prayers.

January 10,1984 I left early for a long day. Got home at 7:00-8:00 PM (?) to a house which was gutted by fire. It was pouring down rain and all I had was the wet cloths on my back. It took nearly a year to get things put back together.

So sorry to hear that. Will be praying for her and your family.
House fires like that are such a loss when there are sentimental items on top of the loss of of property.
This doesn't really compare, we had a rental house to burn down a few years ago. It was an old late 1800's house on one of our properties. My mother had inherited that small tract of land with the old house and barn. She invested the rest of her inheritance money into remodeling the home. Just months before it burned my wife and I had replaced some flooring, painted, and replaced septic tank and system.
Fortunately, the tenants got out of the house in time. To our surprise they didn't want much of their belongings and they walked away and left it except for a truckload that they took and truck and trailer load that we hauled for them.
Don't know if this is of any help being a different state and situation but we reported it to insurance. In our policy there was if I remember correctly $2000 on top of the amount insured for, for the purpose of demolition/cleanup. Of course it cost considerably more to tear it down and dispose of.
We had plumbers to cap off and mark the water and septic lines, in case of a future structure was built.
Had the electric line disconnected from the house.
Fire marshal also advised us to lock the gate to the yard and put up no trespassing signs. He said there was a risk of people snooping around after something like that and getting hurt.
He said the lock and signs wouldn't necessarily keep anybody out but should be legal coverage on the property owners part.
