Had it stored in a closet at room temp. Turned dark color. Anyone had this happen before?

That is pretty normal for oxytetracycline especially once a dose has been drawn out. I can't tell you whether it significantly affects it but I have used it like that on many occaissions and it seems to do the job.

We've always been told to throw it away once it changes color.

Yep. Will often turn dark once you've cracked the seal on it.
So long as it's been stored at proper temp, you didn't contaminate it going in and out of the bottle with dirty needle, etc, and is within the expiration date, I don't have any qualms about using it and expecting it to be fully effective.
I wouldn't throw it out.
