I had a heifer calf born the other day with no tail. Not even a nub. She seems to be healthy and otherwise normal but it is different. She will have a tough time swatting flies this summer.

Well we know its not from sheeeetttt build up!! :o

ROFL

Inside joke,,,,there was a thread about tails falling off from sheeeet buildup.........  sheeeeeeeetttttttt.........

LOL

Actually... I've been told that here in Idaho cows DO occasionally lose their tails due to manure build up in the winter time. Freezes and cuts off circulation, same as if you'd put a band on 'em. I haven't actually witnessed a cow with a whole tail and lot of manure build up one day, and no tail the next, but I've had cows pointed out to me with half-tails and was told by their owner that was the reason for it. And I trust that fellow to know what he's talking about.

You folks are down south where it doesn't get that cold...any Canadian folks want to chime in?

Thank you WIlson Cattle Co., finally some one else who thought that was pure b.s..

Dad and I ran 662 stockers in the chute the otherday and whacked all their tails off with the sawsall. After that we chopped all the 82 cows tails off we aint gotta worry bout it no more

Let me try to clearify the manure on the tail thing. It is not just manure on the tail, that wouldn't be a problem. Some times manure will completely encircle the tail. All the way around it. As they poop again a little more will stick to what is there when they switch or what ever. Wether you believe it or not, if you don't get that ball of manure off the tail; as they grow it will cut the circulation off the part below the ball of manure. It is hard enough that you can't get it off without using pliers or something to break it off in layers. Works like banding, same principle. Because you've never seen it doesn't mean can't happen. It does.

This doesnt sound like that is what happened milkmaid. They guy was trying to say it was a birth defect. Least that is what it sounds like to me.

I know... I was responding to the two posts above mine - Avery and sd's. Just wanted to put my 2 cents in on the manure-on-the-tail issue. The original post does sound like a birth defect.

I have never seen and have never heard of tailless calves. I am no vet but this sounds like a genetic defect. Are the sire and dam related??? Is Doc Harris around with his list of known genetic defects??? If this is a purebred or fullblood bull? If so contact the breed association and ask them if they have ever heard of this. I would definitely cull the calf at weaning so don't get attached to it.

Did you see it born that way or were you a couple days late and the coyotes chewed it off while laying in the pasture?

Having had a little experience with coyotes, if he had be a couple of days late the coyotes would have ate the calf - not just the tail.

I realize that this calf was born without a tail. I was referring to the statement that it was B.S. for a manure buildup to choke the circulation off of a tail and cause it to fall off. You're right Camp, if coyotes had time to chew a tail off there wouldn't be a calf left anyway.

Never heard of one being born that way - was it totally sealed off - hair normal - not raw like it was cut???
Nature likes to throw something new at us. I would report it to breed assn. if purebred parent on either side.

The way people like to own something different it might be a million dollar baby
I'd like to know if it was a true bob tail also.

(edit) oops

somewhere and i can't remember where I read that calves can be born with no tails due to a vitamin or mineral deficiency, and can't for the life of me find where I read that or what vitamin or mineral they are deficient in.

Just a thought: I know a little girl who was born with no arm below the elbow. The doctor's explanation was the umbilical cord was wrapped around it and it never developed just fate and nothing to do with genetics.
