I am newbie and I have some questions on calf vaccinations. I just bought some property with the cattle included.

I have 23 calves that were born in September. They haven't had any vaccinations or havent been banded. If I want to band as soon as possible, what is the timeline I need to look at and what vaccinations would you use?

Do I need to give a tetnus a week before banding? Can I vaccinate for tetnus and blackleg at the same time?

I am new so all information will be helpful! Thanks.
 
There are blackleg vaccines that include tetnus. I am not certain which ones they are but I know they are available. I have never heard of tetnus being an issue in banding calves that young but if you are vaccinating for blackleg you might as well cover that base too. The various blackleg vaccines are about the cheapest thing that there is to use and I definitely advise using them. I have also had good luck using Nasalgen or Enforce 3 on calves. Those cured a lot issues I was having with calves.
 
Yes it would be a good idea to vaccinate for tetanus about 2 weeks before banding. It is not usually done but is the only way to ensure immunity. They would also probably still have some maternal antibodies at that age.
The age of banding depends on the size of your bander and bands, some of the small ones that are also used on sheep are not much good after about 2 months.

I would give them all 7 way blackleg, type A blackleg and possibly vira shield. I use the little green bands and they work fine up until they get to big to get on a calf, and yours will still be small enough. It would be fine to give them the shots and then band a couple weeks later, but I never do and I have never had a tetanus problem.
 
I have seen tetanus in banded calves - both in baby calves, and in big 4-6cwt bulls.
Plenty have been banded with no problems, but if you lose just one, that loss would likely pay for a lifetime's worth of vaccine.
Best bet is to give a Clostridial bacterin/toxoid containing tetanus toxoid at least 2 weeks prior to band application, then booster.

Have seen some wrecks where tetanus toxoid was given at the time of band application, on larger bulls - it's a roll of the dice, and a race to see if the animal responds before tetanus toxin is produced - and sometimes the bacteria win in that contest. As Louis Pasteur said, "In the end, it is the microbes that will have the last word...".
Had a particularly bad one a year or two back where a producer lost 15-20 600lb bulls that were vaccinated at banding, but 7-10 days out, they started dying of tetanus.

Yep the ones I have used on a couple thousand calves say " not recommend for calves over 250lbs" I still use them as long as I can one on, and sometimes I have to get them down through the ban one at a time. The main issue I have seen with different kinds of bands, is the ones that use a band that looks like a price of rubber hose with a metal clip that slides down it, I have seen those not get tight enough and cause some bad problems.
 
They'll still work, like you say--IF you can get them on. Had some break--all from the same package. May have been sitting on the shelf too long and just old, but I got a different brand and had no more problems. I don't castrate much so I can't really say.

The ones with the aluminum rings and the tubing I think are the old EZE rings/clips.
