I just purchased a house with 4 acres of current farm land. My son wants to get involved in 4-H as well as raise cattle. once i fence in the three acre pasture and build a shelter, could i possibly hold 2 or more head to produce market calves. im just looking to break even and maintain the agg exemtion as well as facilitate his 4-H development.

Steve it just depends on the quality of grass you have and where you live. Get in touch with a county extension agent and have them look at your land, they should be able to help. If no, find an old rancher in your area and ask for his advice.

I am located in Mercedes, Texas near Brownsville. The pasture is currently a working farm so there is no grass at this time. I do however intend to plant something local to the area as well as suppliment with hay and feed. Im still about a year from my first purchase, just trying to learn as much as i can. thanks to all for the great advice.
