With the new Hereford bull being stifled from fighting off bull that came over the fence from a neighboring property, it caused a huge problem and change of plans. Had to turn our big 5 year old bull out to take the place of the injured bull.
We did not want to use the older bull because he has several daughters in the herd as well as his dam and several sisters.
Used him last year on some heifers that were mainly his daughters and daughters of a half brother to him.
Have had a few things come up with some of the resulting calves that gave us reason to not want to go that route again.
The original plan was to sell him after we saw for sure that the new Hereford bull was going work out, which he would have had he not been injured.
Reluctantly we put the big bull in because we have to get cows bred, and it's pretty late to be bull shopping as finding a good quality bull equal or better than we had.
This morning, we kind of had a moment of clarity about a way forward. Some friends have just a few bulls that they are just now trying to sell. I saw them a few months ago, and we are thinking of buying one of those. Those bulls are calving ease registered Angus. That will do to finish our spring calvers and possibly some heifers if we can afford to buy a few to breed this fall. Part of the plan is to sell a few cows pretty soon.
The breeder where we got the registered Hereford bull from is out of bulls right now, but will have some fall yearlings.
We are hoping to get a bull from them that will be more of a performance bull and we can use him on cows and use the Angus bull heifers.
Really is aggravating because we like the Hereford bull so well and it's so unnecessary for that to have happened, it ruined a good bull and will cost us more to replace him,
Trying to make lemonade out of a bad situation, but at least we are regrouped and focused on a way forward.
