Is anyone else tired of hearing the word "Pandemic" used over and over lately? What was wrong with the old word "epidemic" anyway?

Just wondering if I'm the only one that word rubs the wrong way?

It's funny you brought this up! I was just telling someone today how my vocabulary has recently expanded to these 5 dollar words.Kind of like the word "Implode" heck, why not say demolish, or blow the darn thing up?

No your not the only one. We grow chickens for Pligrims Pride so we really hear it alot. The company is taking lots of precautions to be prepared just in case. We disinfect everything and now there spraying down feed trucks and service men trucks as they leave each farm just to be on the safe side. The media is, as usual, trying to scare the American public.

It bugs me too, but used correctly it's valid. Epidemic is localized, pandemic extends over multiple countrys (sort of).
But it still irritates the snot out of me to hear it a dozen times a day.

I believe an epidemic usually refers to a smaller area of infection, usually within like a city or county. A pandemic is much bigger. It refers to an area of infection through entire states or countries.

I assume you keep hearing this pandemic about the bird flu?

Pandemic has a meaning. An epidemic is bad, but a pandemic is worse because it is affecting more folks, animals, or whatever, or over a bigger area.

The word that goads me is "offload". Why could things be "unloaded" in the past, but now they have to be "offloaded"? What happens if you get in a hurry and just go ahead and "unload" whatever it is. Do you have to pay a fine?

Why do you have to "offload" or "deplane"" from an airplane? Seems like you could just "get off" and it would work just as well.
Must be some sort of political correct something or other that I have missed.

Offloading and deplaneing (sp?) sounds fancier and more important would be my guess. Plus both terms are confusing and keeps anyone from figuring out what's really going on.
