I was approached by my friend asking if I wanted to rent a 14 acre pasture.. I then asked him to take me to look at it and he showed me below is some pictures. It has a ton of clover and good rye and clover in there only problem is weeds are out of hand in some areas the farmer sold his cattle last fall and never told the owner till now he wasnt going to rent it no fertilizer was applies nor any herbicides to control the weeds... but there is some clover thats 2 foot tall and super thick in there..I am gonna cut it for hay soon and try to get it under control i am not gonna spray till later this fall. I picked it up for $ 400.00 a year for 3 years. I will have to put up new fence andI can add another 10 head to my herd. I am happy with that deal..

I would be happy to i dont know about there but around here findung land to rent is the hardest thing to do. wont it be worth that in hay? the last place i rented was 83 acres i brushoged fixed fence and paid 2500 a year. also what do have 10 of on 14 acres?

Yes.. It will definately be worth it in hay or pasture. I have alot of hay fields to cut though but none this good of quality. Yes land is extremely hard to fine around here. I also raise beans and corn and lease 930 acres total but I do not want to turn that land into pasture. I was saying I can add 10 more head to my existing herd.

around here we normaly figure 3 acres to a moma cow or up to 1500 pounds of calves on some feed per acre at first that just hit me as 10 moma cows on 14 acres i didnt think about what else you might have on it.

looks like you got that place for a decent rent price.

thanks 1982vett and bigbull.. I am still learning about the cattle business all the time and I thought it was a good deal so I decided to rent it. I figured I can expand my herd by 10 and use rotational grazing between that place and mine or use as a hay field for one spring cutting then a pasture land for the rest of the year. I am not sure yet only downside is there is no well onsite but a spring i thought about cutting into to give cattle easy access to drink.

Looks good.
What's the stocking rate you're shooting for. 10 hs might be just a bit much.

I am planning to keep 10 calves on that piece and rotate from one side to another and do some rotational grazing. between the 2 halves. If I find there is not enough for them to eat open the whole thing up where they can graze on both sides I want to control the grazing so they dont just pick the best grasses and not eat everything. This is something new I wanted to try with the 10 I plan on buying. I have 33 head at my house that I do not do rotational grazing and see how they left spots here and there all over the place. If it works in this smaller tract I will try this at my house on the almost 90 acres they are on.

10 calves will be a good number I think. You still may end up haying in winter a little.

Looks good. As long as we get rain you should be fine with your calves. Price sounds good. Think you're on the right track on rotating them. I rent a piece behind me for about the same money. Neighbor does most the mowing and fence work. Just a gate between us. I have hayed some of it if needed.

fitz

Thanks hooknline and fitz... I could hay that its great hay especially after getting the weeds under control one side is pure clover and orchard grass and fescue... i will spray this fall and fertilize in the spring I may spray some nitrogen on it this summer

Does anyone know how long I should wait to plant alfalfa after I have sprayed 24-d in a pasture.. I plan on over seeding next month and haven't sprayed yet? Should I spray and kill weeds this year and only overseed with grass this year and then do the alfalfa in the spring ?
