The cylinder on my disc mower has a relief valve on top of it. When I raise the mower it sprays hydraulic fluid out of it and it doesn't want to raise. Do I have a bad seal in the cylinder ? I can get it to raise but it sprays a lot of fluid while doing it.
 
Sounds to me like the valve is bad, not the cylinder. The valve on my mower is not connected to the cylinder except through a couple of fittings.

Let me think about this just a second. The needle valve on my mower controls how fast the bar goes down (I believe) so the only time it sees pressure is when the bar is being lowered. That means there is a check valve somewhere …….. What if the seals were leaking in the cylinder. Nope, then would have trouble lifting ….

Nope, sticking to my original statement.
 
I would be checking any hydraulic hoses first. Be carefull not to put your hands around where spraying out the high pressures can penetrate skin and cause big damage.

If it is a 1 way cylinder ( only has one hose attached) then yes your seals in your cylinder are leaking by causing fluid to get on the back side ( dry side)
If that is hows yours is set up then the fitting you are refferring to is a vent so air can suck in and escape when the cylinder is going in and out

Yes that's how mine works. Thanks that what I thought just wanted to make sure. I will take it off and have it fixed.
