Just traded out some bull calves for 4 replacement heifer calves with my neighbor. He helped me pick them out. They are Red Brangus x Hereford crosses. I know a lot of people recommend starting with cow calf pairs or 3 ways but I would rather put myself in this guys hands then roughing it at the sale barn. Don't be too rough on them or me. But If you don't like them I'd like to hear it but please put it mildly or I might cry. ;-)

We did clean up the mess in the corals since the pictures.

That wierd gloss on her coat is from spraying them for flies. They'll be vaced and wormed next weekend. We ran out of wasp spray as we were about to work them. The wasps won this round. :oops:

I bought the cows from the same guy, but here are a couple of pics. The first one is 3 bull calves and one heifer from 3 months ago. The other two pics are from Saturday.

you did good. I'd take a pasture full of those heifers. You need to spray all those weeds though.

Good question. I assumed they are about 7 to 8 months old. The friend I bought them from calves year around. He said the smallest weighs 490lbs and the largest 610lbs. I know that a couple of the heifers are as big or bigger than the bull calves I have and the largest is over 7 months, the youngest about 6 months. The one in the last picture he said wieghed 610lbs. I guess I didn't think to ask because I know he keeps very little records. He does have a very good memory though and I should have asked him. I'll ask him if I see him next weekend.

very good heifers, I'd gladly take all 4. They should be calf raising machines, if I am not mistaken this is Caustic's ideal cross, he is very experienced with this type of cross, why not ask his opinion as well as advice on bull selection from here on.
 
Keep on makeing choices like this and you don,t need to ask for any more advice. My compliments. Would not worry about advice from your neighbor either. It sure looks like he knows what he is doing.
What kind of bull do you plan to put on them?

It will be a Red Brangus bull from my neighbors herd. He's already got one that will work for heifers. I'll trade the calves from these heifers for F1's again. I'm hoping to have mostly F1's when I start a terminal cross. Hopefully that will happen in 2010.
