New farm

My grandfather bought a new farm last year, 75 acres that joined the old home place. The place has decent fence around it but is grown up with briars trees, we've got most of it mowed down most of it was over 12 feet tall. There was small amounts of fescue in patches. Our plan is to keep it mowed and sprayed with 2-4d, run cows on it so they can eat what they can/will. It's to steep to disk and to much trash from the trees and briars to run a no-till drill thru it. Was wondering if broadcasting free on top of the ground before or on a snow would help establish some grass then maybe I could come back with some clover and orchard grass. What is you opinions on this method. Thanks

I think you would get better results if you replaced the 2,4-D with Remedy. I think once you get saplings and briars down the growth of grasses might surprise you.

I hope the grass does surprise us. This place hadn't been touched in probably 8 years. The fence is old woven wire and cedar post it's every bit of 30 years old and in surprisingly good shape just a few spots need tres cut off of it. Your probably right about remedy we might try it next spring

Plus one one the remedy, plus one the grass will take back over. I have had excellent results broadcasting fescue on a snow in February. It used to be the norm here in Ky.

We do that with clover BF but I never thought about trying it with fescue.

Fescue dies out here if it does not get going well in the fall. It will come up in the spring, but usually withers and dies in the heat.

I would use Remedy or my first choice, Surmount. Remedy works great on MF rose. Surmount is much more effective on briers/blackberrys. Funny though, it hammers all of the sapling size stuff including oak, cedar, hackberry but doesn;t seem to affect sapling black walnuts.

The rule of thumb that I've always heard is to sew fescue in a month that ends in "r".
