New computer choices?

If you go to http://www.gotapex.com and look around, they've often got discount/coupon codes for Dell that will knock even more money off.. Bought a laptop that was originally $549, but I found a $100 off instant coupon on gotapex.com which knocked it down to $449, and there was also a $50 mail in rebate.... Totalled out to about $475 w/ shipping, and I got the rebate back in just a few weeks.. All total, it was $425 delivered..

Something that strikes me as odd is that nobody has asked you yet, what do you plan to DO with this computer?? Different uses = different machines... If it's just a 'surf the web and check email' computer, I'd probably just keep an eye on gotapex.com until you see something that looks rock bottom from Dell, and jump all over it... They seem to make solid machines.

Good luck!

I use to be Dell all the Way. Between me, my parents and my Aunt I have been the reason of buying 5 complete units over the years.

Dell use to have the best warranty and really be prompt on helping you with problems. But past few years they have out sourced their customer service. Now when you call to get help you can hardly even understand the person helping you. I believe you talk to someone in India or somewhere over there. Use to you could get some good help over the phone.

Also last I read Dell dropped there warranty from 1 year to 90 days on most of their computers.

I will personally never buy a Dell again. I am not sure who is better in these regards but might look into a HP heard they still offer 1 year warranty.

i dont even know what a commodore 64 is. shows how much or little i know about puters. i had one of the super big gateway monitors catch on fire one time. have heard good and bad things abotu dell. when i get moved into my house if i ever get it liveable i'm going to get a (gateway probably) laptop and wireless internet, i think.

A Commodore 64 was a 1970's or so "toy" computer that some people actually tried to use to do real work...long before the Internet was available to the public. Think the "64" stood for "64 KB" (less memory than my pocket calculator)...lol. Then there were the Apple II's, Apple II+'s, and the Apple C's. Not much better and had external floppy drives that had very little storage capacity...still before Internet explosion.

It's a Dell Inspiron 8600 wireless with Intel for me. Our last laptop was a gateway and ran hot, slow, and froze up regularly. Of course the Dell was a little spendy, but we ordered it with the specs we needed for online classes. Never had to use the tech services in 2 years. Goodluck with your choice.

My family has had good luck with Gateways. As a matter of fact, my new one will be here any day now. :D 8)

I've been around Dells too, they are nice computers, but for some unknown reason (even to me), I like Gateways more

Thanks for the input. We ended up buying a Emachine which Gateway owns. Overall it seemed like the best deal with all the rebates. Although after Christmas they had the Gateway we looked at with $170 of rebates which would have got it close. But coulda shoulda woulda.

I'm 20 months into a Dell and I've had enuff problems. It can be a hassle with their service lines (located in India!!!!)but they can usually get you worked thru problems but you had better be patient! I bought a 3 yr. warranty (on sale) and am glad! I've had one free service call (from 55 miles away) and they replaced a lot of parts to make sure they got the problem.I am having disc drive problems now and will have to try the phone lines again

I found that the e-mail service deal works a whole lot better then the telephone. At least I can understand what the say when it's typed. Can't understand a thing when they speak

I need a new computer at the moment. I do not know if it is possible or not. But I am going to look into different brands and try to find out if the person you call for support can at least speak American. I do not care if they get them made in India (prefer American made but probably wishful thinking) But I think there should be a tech line for each country and you should be able to understand the person you talk to. Years ago it was not that way for Dell but lately you are stuck trying to understand the accent and the complicated computer talk.
